Caracas uncertainty hangs heavily over Venezuela’s capital as residents awaken to a changed political reality. Twenty four hours after a dramatic United States strike and the detention of President Nicolás Maduro, the city remains tense and subdued. Streets are busy yet cautious, queues stretch outside supermarkets, and conversations are filled with doubt rather than celebration. Caracas uncertainty defines the mood, shaping every interaction and every anxious glance toward the sky.

From the early morning hours on Sunday, many citizens ventured out not to protest or rejoice, but to prepare. Elderly couples queued for flour and milk, young workers clutched phones seeking news, and shopkeepers watched supplies disappear quickly. The sense of shock is still raw, amplified by memories of explosions that shattered sleep during the night. Caracas uncertainty is not only political, but deeply personal, rooted in fear of what may come next.

Griselda Guzmán, a pensioner who has lived through decades of upheaval, spoke quietly while waiting outside a grocery store. She described uncertainty as her dominant feeling, fighting tears as she imagined further disruption. For her generation, the sudden fall of a long-standing leader brings no immediate relief. Instead, it revives memories of instability, shortages, and broken promises. Caracas uncertainty, she said, feels heavier because nothing seems resolved.

Across the city, younger Venezuelans echoed similar doubts. Sauriany, an administrative worker at the state electricity company, queued with her partner Leandro for basic goods. They spoke of anger mixed with disbelief at waking to news of bombs falling while the city slept. Leandro questioned whether force could ever deliver peace, doubting that foreign intervention would heal a country already scarred by division. Their words reflected a shared belief that Caracas uncertainty has only intensified.

The overnight assault plunged several neighbourhoods into darkness. Residents recalled aircraft circling above as electricity and water supplies failed. Gabriel Vásquez, a video-maker from central Caracas, described the terrifying moment he thought his home might be struck next. By Sunday, his area still lacked power, water, and phone reception. For him, Caracas uncertainty was measured in practical hardships as much as political fears.

Despite these conditions, many streets remained active. Pharmacies and supermarkets were overcrowded, surprising some residents who expected people to stay home. Julio Pimentel, a designer, noted that daily life continues even during crisis, driven by necessity rather than confidence. He observed that Caracas uncertainty forces people into survival mode, focusing on essentials while awaiting clearer signals from those in power.

Notably absent was any mass celebration of Maduro’s removal. Many locals attributed this silence to fear of retaliation from a regime apparatus that remains intact. Others felt that removing one leader has not transformed underlying realities. Caracas uncertainty persists because institutions, security forces, and economic conditions appear largely unchanged.

On Sunday, armed forces chief Vladimir Padrino López announced recognition of Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as acting president. He condemned Maduro’s detention as a kidnapping and framed continuity as essential for stability. Former US president Donald Trump signalled willingness to engage with Rodríguez, suggesting cooperation if she pursued reforms aligned with Washington’s expectations. These statements added another layer to Caracas uncertainty, raising questions about sovereignty and legitimacy.

For supporters of the Bolivarian movement, Maduro’s arrest does not signal an end. Antonio Guzmán, speaking alongside his wife, compared the situation to a chess game where only one piece was removed. He argued that everyday hardships remain unchanged and warned against premature conclusions. His view reflects a broader sentiment that Caracas uncertainty stems from unresolved power structures rather than individual leaders.

Yet quiet satisfaction exists among those who blame Maduro for years of decline. Some residents recalled images of him in custody with grim approval, seeing accountability where they once saw impunity. They spoke of missed opportunities after the disputed 2024 election, when independent data suggested he had lost. For them, Caracas uncertainty includes cautious hope, tempered by awareness of past disappointments.

Opposition supporters believe Maduro could have eased the transition by stepping aside peacefully. Instead, they argue, his decision to cling to power invited dramatic consequences. Now facing trial in the United States, he symbolises both downfall and unresolved conflict. Caracas uncertainty grows because his absence has not clarified the path forward, leaving leadership contested and futures unclear.

Others strongly rejected the manner of his removal. Critics of the US action described it as a violation of international law and national sovereignty. Sauriany insisted that Venezuela’s problems must be solved internally, without external force dictating outcomes. Her view resonates across political lines, uniting citizens in discomfort over foreign military intervention. Caracas uncertainty is thus intertwined with questions of dignity and self-determination.

The possibility that Rodríguez may complete the remaining presidential term divides opinion sharply. While some see continuity as stabilising, opposition figures fear further entrenchment of the existing system. Trump’s remarks suggesting support for Rodríguez heightened these fears, reinforcing perceptions that Venezuela’s fate is being shaped elsewhere. This perception fuels Caracas uncertainty, undermining trust in any announced transition.

Regional reactions underscore the broader implications. Several Latin American governments warned that the attack set a dangerous precedent for peace and security. Colombia moved swiftly, deploying thousands of troops to its border as a precaution against spillover instability. Armoured vehicles appeared near crossings, signalling regional anxiety rather than confidence. Caracas uncertainty now echoes beyond national borders.

Armed groups also weighed in. The National Liberation Army condemned the strike as imperial aggression, vowing resistance. While no immediate violence erupted, analysts caution that tensions could escalate quickly. For ordinary residents, such warnings deepen unease, reinforcing the sense that the crisis is only beginning. Caracas uncertainty feels prolonged, with no clear endpoint.

As Sunday progressed, daily routines continued under a cloud of speculation. People stocked food, checked on relatives, and monitored news updates. Conversations returned repeatedly to the same question: what happens next. Antonio Guzmán summed up the prevailing mood while waiting patiently in line, admitting that no one truly understands the unfolding situation. His words captured the essence of Caracas uncertainty.

For now, the capital exists in a fragile pause. Fear, anger, relief, and hope coexist uneasily, shaped by personal experience and political belief. The removal of a president has not delivered clarity, only intensified questions. As night falls again over Caracas, uncertainty remains the city’s most tangible reality, defining a moment that will shape Venezuela’s future.
