In a fatal twist of fate that starkly echoes the dangers of big game hunting, American millionaire Asher Watkins met a sudden and violent end during a safari expedition in South Africa’s Limpopo Province. Watkins, aged 52, was reportedly gored to death by a Cape buffalo — a beast notorious for its lethal unpredictability — while on a £7,500 trophy hunting tour arranged by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris.
The tragedy unfolded within the vast expanse of the Bambisana concession, a 50,000-acre hunting reserve known for its wild and untamed terrain. Watkins, a self-proclaimed wildlife conservationist and seasoned hunter, had been stalking a 200-stone buffalo when the animal unexpectedly emerged from the thickets and charged at a staggering 35mph. He was struck with such force that he died almost instantly at the scene.
Cape buffaloes, referred to by locals as the “Black Death,” have long had a deadly reputation. Responsible for approximately 200 human deaths annually, they are feared even more than lions, rhinos, and crocodiles within hunting communities. Their aggression, particularly when provoked or surprised, makes them among the most dangerous animals in Africa.
Watkins was accompanied by a professional hunter and a tracker at the time of the incident, both of whom were unable to prevent the animal’s lightning-fast attack. The reason for the buffalo’s aggressive behaviour remains unclear, but it is believed that the animal had not been wounded or provoked before the charge.
Coenraad Vermaak Safaris released a heartfelt statement through spokesman Hans Vermaak, confirming the loss: “It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA. On Sunday, while on a hunting safari with us in South Africa’s Limpopo Province, Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo. He was tracking it together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers. This is a devastating incident and our hearts go out to his loved ones.”
Vermaak added that the safari company is working closely with Watkins’ family members, both those who were in South Africa and those back home in the United States, to provide support during their time of unimaginable grief.
Watkins, a Texas native, was known for his success in the real estate industry through his company, the Watkins Ranch Group. The firm specialised in luxury ranch properties, some listed as high as £30 million. Despite his wealth, Watkins cultivated an image of rugged adventure, frequently sharing photos and stories of his hunts across North America and Africa on social media. Among his past conquests were mountain lions, deer, and other large game — trophies he regarded as part of what he considered a commitment to conservation through controlled hunting.
The hunter’s death has devastated his family. His former partner and teenage daughter, Savannah, were notified soon after the incident. A close family friend revealed, “He spent every spare moment he could with Savannah and shared his life with her. Nobody could love a daughter more than he did. She will be broken to lose Asher, who was her best friend as well as her dad.”
His mother Gwen, brother Amon, and stepfather Tony, who were staying at the same luxury lodge, were also informed of the tragic news shortly thereafter. The safari, which was intended to be both a family adventure and a professional hunting expedition, has now turned into a nightmare marked by irreversible loss.
As debate continues worldwide over the ethics and dangers of big game hunting, this incident has reignited discussions about the risks involved, even for the most experienced hunters. The wild, untamed environment of the African bush offers little room for error, and as this tragic case demonstrates, even the most prepared and well-equipped individuals are not immune to its fatal unpredictability.
The death of Asher Watkins stands as a grim reminder of nature’s might and the inherent risks in the pursuit of dominance over it. While his friends and family mourn a father, son, brother, and entrepreneur, others reflect on the broader implications of a life lost in the pursuit of a trophy.
