In a critical display of international solidarity, European leaders, led by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for high-stakes discussions at the White House aimed at ending Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Today, Starmer flew to Washington, D.C., to meet alongside a host of European allies, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, all of whom will flank Zelensky during the pivotal talks.
The delegation is also joined by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary-General, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who confirmed her participation at Zelensky’s request. The meeting comes in the wake of the recent face-to-face summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where efforts to reach a ceasefire in the three-year conflict ultimately failed.
European leaders hope the meeting avoids a repeat of the confrontational scenes in the Oval Office last February, when Trump and U.S. Vice President JD Vance publicly criticized Zelensky, raising tensions in a broadcast witnessed by millions worldwide. During that encounter, Trump pointed a finger at Zelensky, warning he was “gambling with World War Three,” while Vance questioned the Ukrainian leader’s gratitude in a visibly tense exchange. In contrast, President Putin received a state-level reception and red-carpet treatment during his visit with Trump, further highlighting geopolitical complexities surrounding the conflict.
The discussions in Washington follow a virtual meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a 30-plus nation alliance prepared to support peace efforts in Ukraine. Reports indicate that Starmer emphasized the unity of European partners in their support for Ukraine, while also noting that the group’s military planning had reached an advanced stage. A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed that the virtual session focused on “support for Ukraine and next steps in peace negotiations following President Trump’s meeting with President Putin in Alaska.” Leaders reiterated their ongoing support for Ukraine and praised Zelensky’s commitment to pursuing a just and lasting peace.
Additionally, the coalition commended Trump’s commitment to providing security guarantees for Ukraine, highlighting the role of the Multinational Force Ukraine in ensuring regional stability. Leaders reaffirmed their readiness to deploy reassurance forces once hostilities cease, support the safeguarding of Ukraine’s skies and seas, and assist in the rebuilding of its armed forces.
Amid these discussions, Zelensky emphasized that any territorial issues, including Russian demands over the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, must be resolved only at a table involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine. “Russia is still unsuccessful in the Donetsk region. Putin has been unable to take it for 12 years. The constitution of Ukraine makes it impossible to cede territory or trade land,” Zelensky stated firmly.
Special U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff added that Russia had, for the first time in negotiations, agreed to “game-changing” security guarantees for Ukraine, offering protection similar to NATO’s Article 5, which considers an armed attack against one ally as an attack against all.
Speaking in Brussels alongside Zelensky, von der Leyen underscored the European Union’s unwavering support for Kyiv, emphasizing that Europe has remained united alongside Ukraine and will continue to provide backing for as long as necessary to achieve just and lasting peace. She also warned that international borders cannot be changed by force and that decisions regarding Ukrainian territory must be made solely by Ukraine. “These are challenging times. Only Ukraine can choose its own destiny, but Ukraine can always count on Europe,” she said.
The joint European stance highlights a renewed commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty, ensuring that diplomatic negotiations, security assurances, and military preparedness remain closely coordinated, while sending a clear message to the international community that Ukraine’s territorial integrity will not be compromised.
