Families of victims have expressed anger after the operator of a paddleboarding business, linked to an incident that resulted in four deaths, launched an appeal against their conviction, describing the move as “brazen” and deeply distressing.
The appeal concerns a prior court ruling that found the business owner responsible for serious safety failings during an organised paddleboarding activity that ended in tragedy.
Relatives of those who died say the decision to challenge the verdict has reopened painful wounds and added to their distress following years of legal proceedings.
The original case centred on alleged failures in risk assessment, safety planning and supervision during the activity, which took place on open water conditions that rapidly deteriorated.
Court documents previously detailed concerns about inadequate safety briefings and insufficient emergency preparedness, though the defence argued that conditions changed unexpectedly and could not have been fully anticipated.
Legal representatives for the paddleboard operator are now seeking to overturn or reduce aspects of the ruling, citing grounds that have not been fully disclosed publicly.
Prosecutors are expected to oppose the appeal, maintaining that the original judgment was supported by substantial evidence regarding negligence and duty of care.
Water safety campaigners say the case has become a key example in ongoing debates about regulation in recreational water sports and commercial outdoor activity providers.
Authorities have reiterated warnings about the importance of proper safety procedures, training and supervision for high-risk leisure activities.
The families involved have called for the legal process to conclude swiftly, saying prolonged appeals prolong their grief and prevent closure.
The appellate court is expected to consider whether legal errors were made in the original trial or whether the conviction should stand.
