Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies have begun searching the apartment of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak. The anti-corruption bureau Nabu confirmed that its investigative searches had been authorised and stated that further details would follow. Although a corruption scandal has engulfed several figures close to Zelensky, neither he nor Yermak have been accused of any wrongdoing.
Yermak, who has played a crucial role in Ukraine’s response to Russia’s full-scale war and serves as Kyiv’s lead negotiator in peace talks with the US, confirmed on social media that both Nabu and the specialised anti-corruption prosecutor’s office (Sapo) were conducting procedural actions at his home. He stated that his lawyers were on site and that he was co-operating fully.
This month, Ukraine has been rocked by a corruption scandal in the energy sector involving an alleged $100 million embezzlement scheme. Investigators from Nabu and Sapo said they uncovered a widespread plan to take kickbacks and influence state-owned companies, including the nuclear energy firm Enerhoatom. Several suspects have already been charged, prompting public outrage as funds critical for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure were allegedly diverted.
The scandal comes at a time when Russian attacks have severely damaged Ukraine’s energy network, leaving citizens with only limited electricity. In response, Zelensky has dismissed two ministers, and several suspects have been detained. One of his former business associates, Timur Mindich, has fled the country; he was co-owner of the TV studio where Zelensky’s acting career began before his presidency.
Yermak’s position is increasingly under scrutiny, with critics calling for his resignation, though he remains a central figure in the government’s ongoing efforts to manage both the war and internal corruption. The investigation highlights Ukraine’s determination to address high-level corruption while maintaining governmental stability during a time of national crisis.
