YouTuber and wrestler Logan Paul has made history by selling his ultra-rare Pikachu Illustrator Pokémon card for an eye-watering $16.492 million (£12 million), setting a new record for the most expensive trading card ever sold at auction.
Paul originally bought the card in 2021 for $5.3 million (£3.9 million), already a record at the time. The Pikachu Illustrator, issued in 1998 as part of a Pokémon contest, is one of only around 40 known copies worldwide. Paul’s card is the only one graded PSA 10, meaning it is virtually flawless.
The winning bidder was venture capitalist AJ Scaramucci, son of former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci. Scaramucci called the purchase the start of a “planetary treasure hunt,” hinting at plans to acquire historic and rare collectibles, from T-Rex fossils to the Declaration of Independence.
During the auction, Paul was surprised with the news live on YouTube, describing the result as “absolutely insane” while confetti fell. Guinness World Records confirmed the card’s historic sale. Paul even gifted Scaramucci the diamond necklace he wore during his WWE debut at WrestleMania 38 in 2022, adding a personal touch to the high-profile transaction.
Goldin Auctions CEO Ken Goldin said the Pokémon market is “blazing hot” and emphasized that the Pikachu Illustrator is the most sought-after card. Paul admitted he’s a collector, not a reseller, but joked the funds would come in handy for his “expensive wedding” with Danish model Nina Agdal in Lake Como, Italy, in August 2025.
This sale highlights the booming market for Pokémon collectibles, where rare cards now command multi-million-dollar prices. Paul’s record-breaking transaction cements both the card’s legendary status and his influence in the global collectibles scene, merging pop culture, entertainment, and high-stakes auctions like never before.
