Ben Shelton has moved within one victory of ending a long wait for American men’s tennis after reaching his first Grand Slam final with a determined comeback victory over fellow American Frances Tiafoe at the US Open.

The 23-year-old Shelton recovered from losing the opening set to defeat the 11th-seeded Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in a gripping all-American semifinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The contest lasted three hours and 16 minutes, with almost 24,000 spectators creating an intense atmosphere throughout the night.

Shelton’s victory means he will play top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany in Sunday’s final. Zverev reached the championship match after defeating Karen Khachanov in the other semifinal.

The stakes are particularly high for Shelton and American tennis. He is now one victory away from becoming the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick captured the US Open championship in 2003.

The achievement also carries considerable historical significance. Shelton has become the first Black American man to reach the US Open men’s singles final since Arthur Ashe did so in 1972. He is also the first Black American man to reach a Grand Slam singles final since MaliVai Washington competed in the Wimbledon final in 1996.

Yet Shelton appeared determined not to allow the historical significance of the occasion to overwhelm his performance. Throughout the match, he remained focused on the immediate challenge of defeating Tiafoe, another American whose career has been closely associated with the hopes of a new generation of US men’s tennis players.

The semifinal began with Tiafoe establishing early control. The first set remained closely contested until Shelton reached four-all while serving. Leading 30-love, Shelton suddenly lost momentum and dropped four of the next five points, including a double fault on break point.

Tiafoe took advantage of the opportunity and held serve without dropping a point to secure the opening set after 45 minutes.

Shelton responded immediately in the second set. He broke Tiafoe’s serve at love to take a 2-0 lead, although Tiafoe quickly levelled the set by breaking back.

From that point, however, Shelton increasingly relied on the powerful serve that has become one of the defining weapons of his game. His first serve repeatedly reached extraordinary speeds, including deliveries above 140mph.

At 3-3, Shelton produced a sequence of serves measuring approximately 125mph, 144mph, 139mph and 140mph, with the final two resulting in aces. He then broke Tiafoe in the following game before serving out the set. His fastest first serve during the set reached 149mph.

The third set became more physically demanding as both players engaged in longer baseline exchanges. Tiafoe survived several break points early in the set, but Shelton eventually found another opening.

At 2-2, Shelton attacked with a series of powerful backhand winners to break Tiafoe’s serve at love. Tiafoe then faced a lengthy service game at 3-5, lasting around 15 minutes and involving 20 points.

The 28-year-old saved three set points but could not prevent Shelton from taking the fourth opportunity. A forehand into the net gave Shelton the third set and left him one set away from the biggest victory of his career.

Tiafoe still had an opportunity to change the direction of the match at the beginning of the fourth set. Shelton fell behind 15-40 on his opening service game, but he responded with powerful serving, including a 140mph ace and another 144mph delivery that Tiafoe was unable to return effectively.

Both players then held serve repeatedly. At 5-5, the match appeared destined for a tiebreak, potentially forcing Shelton to play a deciding fifth set.

Instead, the younger American produced his most important burst of tennis.

After holding serve to move ahead 6-5, Shelton attacked Tiafoe’s service game and won two extended rallies to reach 30-love. He then secured another point to earn three match points.

Tiafoe saved the first, but a double fault on the second gave Shelton the victory and sent the stadium into celebration.

Shelton said afterwards that he had been surprised by how calm he remained as the match approached its conclusion. He credited his ability to stay composed, confident and focused despite the significance of the moment.

That composure has become one of the most noticeable developments in Shelton’s game this season.

His semifinal appearance came only days after one of the most demanding matches of his career. In the quarterfinals, Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set thriller that finished at approximately 3.33am on Wednesday morning.

That victory ended Alcaraz’s 18-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments and represented Shelton’s first win over a player ranked inside the world’s top three after previously losing 17 consecutive matches against opponents from that group.

Tiafoe also arrived in the semifinal after surviving an extraordinary quarterfinal. He fought back from two sets down against Alex Michelsen and eventually won in a final-set tiebreak after coming within two points of elimination.

For Tiafoe, the defeat represented another painful ending at his home Grand Slam. It was the third time in five years that he had reached the US Open semifinals without advancing to the final.

Despite the disappointment, Tiafoe recognised the improvements in Shelton’s game. He said Shelton was becoming more polished and was no longer relying solely on spectacular shot-making, but was also showing greater resilience during extended rallies.

That evolution has been central to Shelton’s rapid rise in 2026.

The American won the NCAA singles championship at the University of Florida in 2022 and turned professional soon afterwards. Only four months after becoming a professional, he reached the Australian Open quarterfinals.

Later that same year, he reached the US Open semifinals, establishing himself as one of the most promising young players in American tennis.

Since then, Shelton has worked to develop the areas of his game that once lagged behind his powerful serve. His return, baseline consistency, concentration and ability to sustain pressure in long rallies have all improved.

In 2026, those changes have produced a major breakthrough. Shelton has won titles in Dallas, Munich, Stuttgart and Montreal while establishing himself as a more complete player.

His father and coach, Bryan Shelton, said his son’s development had accelerated significantly over the past year. When Ben first arrived on the professional tour, his game was still developing and his rise happened unusually quickly.

The younger Shelton has since become more disciplined and mature, particularly during difficult stretches of matches. His willingness to remain patient in rallies and rely on his athleticism has given him additional ways to win points.

The final against Zverev will provide Shelton with another major challenge.

Shelton has faced the German five times previously and has lost all five encounters. Their meetings took place over a 16-month period during 2024 and 2025, but Sunday’s match will be their first meeting in a Grand Slam tournament.

Zverev enters the final as the top seed and will bring significant experience to the championship match. For Shelton, however, the previous results appear unlikely to undermine his confidence.

He has described problem-solving as a central theme of his run through the tournament and said he is looking forward to applying that approach against Zverev.

The American’s confidence is supported by the transformation of his game. The player who once depended heavily on his serve now has greater variety, stronger baseline play and increased belief in his ability to compete during long and difficult matches.

Sunday’s final therefore represents much more than an opportunity for Shelton to win his first Grand Slam title. It is also a chance for American men’s tennis to end a 23-year wait for a major singles champion.

Roddick’s 2003 US Open triumph remains the last time an American man lifted a Grand Slam singles trophy. Since then, several American players have reached the latter stages of major tournaments, but none has managed to break through to a championship.

Shelton now has the opportunity to change that history on the same court where Roddick achieved his last Grand Slam triumph.

For the 23-year-old, however, the immediate objective remains simple. One more victory stands between him and a place in American tennis history.
