More than 100 firefighters were deployed to battle a major fire in east London after flames engulfed a large building, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and prompting emergency services to urge residents to avoid the area.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that the incident required a substantial emergency response, with more than a dozen fire engines and specialist crews attending the scene. Firefighters worked for several hours to bring the blaze under control while police established cordons around the affected area and paramedics remained on standby to assist anyone injured or affected by smoke.

Authorities said the fire generated significant disruption to nearby roads and public transport services as emergency vehicles gained access to the site. Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed because of the volume of smoke drifting across surrounding neighbourhoods.

The blaze broke out earlier in the day, with emergency control rooms receiving multiple calls from members of the public reporting heavy smoke and visible flames.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered an intense fire that had already spread through large sections of the affected building. Crews immediately began tackling the flames from several directions while specialist teams assessed the structural stability of the property.

London Fire Brigade officials confirmed that more than 100 firefighters participated in the operation, reflecting both the scale and complexity of the incident.

High-reach aerial appliances were deployed alongside specialist equipment designed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered smoke-filled sections of the structure where conditions allowed, while other crews worked externally to reduce the intensity of the flames.

Emergency services remained at the scene throughout the operation, continuously monitoring changing conditions.

Police officers assisted with crowd control, traffic management and public safety, ensuring members of the public remained outside the established exclusion zone.

The London Ambulance Service also attended the incident as a precaution.

Officials did not immediately confirm whether anyone had suffered injuries, although emergency medical teams assessed several individuals affected by smoke or the stressful circumstances surrounding the fire.

Authorities said further updates regarding casualties would be provided once more information became available.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established.

Investigators from the London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police are expected to carry out a joint examination after the scene has been declared safe.

Fire investigators will inspect the building’s electrical systems, structural condition and any available surveillance footage to determine how the blaze started and whether any criminal offences may have been involved.

Officials stressed that it would be inappropriate to speculate before the investigation is complete.

Witnesses described dramatic scenes as smoke rose high above east London, attracting the attention of residents and commuters from considerable distances.

Several people reported hearing emergency sirens moments after the first signs of the fire became visible, while others shared photographs showing firefighters working intensively to contain the flames.

Some nearby businesses temporarily suspended operations as emergency services established safety cordons around the affected area.

Transport operators also warned passengers to expect delays because of road closures and emergency access requirements.

London Fire Brigade advised the public to avoid travelling through the immediate vicinity unless absolutely necessary.

The brigade also reminded residents that smoke can travel significant distances during large fires and encouraged anyone affected to remain indoors where possible until conditions improved.

Large-scale incidents such as this require careful coordination between multiple emergency agencies.

Fire commanders oversee suppression operations while police manage public safety and ambulance crews prepare for any medical emergencies.

Utility companies may also become involved if electricity or gas supplies require isolation to protect firefighters working within the affected area.

Officials praised the professionalism of emergency personnel involved in the response.

The deployment of more than 100 firefighters demonstrated the brigade’s ability to mobilise substantial resources rapidly when confronted with significant urban fires.

London Fire Brigade regularly conducts training exercises designed to prepare crews for complex incidents involving commercial premises, residential buildings and industrial facilities.

The organisation emphasised that public cooperation remains essential during major emergencies.

Residents were asked not to enter restricted areas or interfere with emergency operations, allowing firefighters to work safely and efficiently.

Local authorities said they were monitoring the situation closely and would provide assistance to anyone displaced if residential properties were affected.

Community support teams were placed on standby to respond should evacuation centres become necessary.

Fire safety experts note that large urban fires present unique operational challenges because of dense development, nearby infrastructure and the potential for smoke to affect large populations.

Rapid response, effective coordination and public compliance with safety advice are therefore considered essential in reducing risks.

Following containment of the blaze, structural engineers are expected to assess whether the building remains safe.

If significant damage has occurred, parts of the structure may remain inaccessible until detailed inspections have been completed.

Investigators will also collect forensic evidence aimed at determining the fire’s origin and progression.

The findings could influence future safety recommendations if any deficiencies in building systems or fire prevention measures are identified.

As emergency crews continued dampening down remaining hotspots, authorities thanked members of the public for their patience during the operation.

Road closures and transport disruptions were expected to remain in place until firefighters completed their work and investigators began examining the scene.

Although the immediate priority remained extinguishing the fire and ensuring public safety, officials emphasised that establishing the cause would be equally important once emergency operations concluded.

For now, residents have been urged to continue following official guidance while avoiding unnecessary travel near the affected area.

The London Fire Brigade said further information would be released as the investigation progresses and confirmed that crews would remain at the scene until they were satisfied there was no remaining risk to surrounding properties or the wider community.
