A rare Ferrari worth an estimated £3.7m has been seized by police during a weekend crackdown on dangerous and antisocial driving in central London, as officers targeted motorists accused of breaking road traffic and public safety rules.

The Ferrari Monza SP2 was among 90 vehicles seized by the Metropolitan Police during an operation covering Kensington, Chelsea and Hyde Park. Police said the vehicles had a combined estimated value of more than £8m.

The operation ran from Friday to Sunday and focused on motorists involved in uninsured, dangerous or antisocial driving. According to the Metropolitan Police, the number and total value of vehicles seized represented the highest figures recorded during the five-year history of the operation.

The Ferrari stood out among the vehicles because of its rarity and value. Only 499 examples of the Monza SP2 were produced by Ferrari, making it one of the Italian manufacturer’s most exclusive modern road cars.

Police said the vehicle had been in the UK for only one day when officers stopped it. The driver had reportedly been behind the wheel for less than 30 minutes and held only a provisional driving licence.

The Metropolitan Police also said the driver had no insurance.

The force did not identify the driver or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s arrival in Britain.

A Ferrari Monza SP2 sold at auction earlier this year for approximately £3.7m, illustrating the extraordinary value associated with the model. The precise value of the vehicle seized by police will depend on its specification, provenance, condition and market circumstances.

The Monza SP2 forms part of Ferrari’s limited-production Monza series, which was created as a modern interpretation of the company’s historic barchetta-style racing cars. The cars are characterised by their open cockpit design and focus on performance, exclusivity and collector appeal.

The seizure therefore highlighted an unusual contrast at the heart of the police operation. A vehicle that represents extraordinary wealth and automotive engineering became part of a road-policing case involving basic legal requirements such as licensing and insurance.

Police said 15 of the 90 vehicles were seized using powers that allow officers to remove a vehicle immediately where it has been used in an antisocial manner. The powers are designed to enable officers to intervene without necessarily issuing an initial warning.

Special Chief Inspector Geoff Tatman, who led the operation, said local residents had repeatedly complained about dangerous driving and vehicles modified in ways that create disturbances.

“We regularly hear from local people who are fed up with people driving cars dangerously in the area, or with modifications which make them a nuisance to those who live nearby,” he said.

Tatman said vehicle seizures were intended both to improve road safety and to deter motorists from engaging in dangerous or disruptive behaviour.

The operation comes amid continuing concern in parts of central London about high-performance cars, excessive engine noise and dangerous driving.

Kensington, Chelsea and Hyde Park are areas where wealthy residents, tourists and visitors mix with busy traffic and pedestrian activity. The presence of expensive performance and luxury vehicles is not unusual, but police have increasingly focused on behaviour rather than simply the value or appearance of vehicles.

The Met said officers were specifically targeting driving that posed risks to other road users or caused serious disruption to local communities.

The Ferrari seizure was only one part of a broader policing operation that also resulted in several arrests.

Police said one man was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods and money laundering after officers allegedly found 19 bank cards registered in other people’s names and more than £2,500 in cash.

The discovery of multiple bank cards reportedly belonging to other people prompted officers to investigate whether the man was involved in financial or property-related offences.

A second man was arrested after being stopped on suspicion of driving without insurance. Police said he was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possessing drugs with intent to supply.

Two other arrests were also made during the operation.

One person was arrested on suspicion of using words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress, while another was arrested on suspicion of an immigration offence.

The police did not provide further details about the cases or indicate whether charges had been brought against the individuals involved.

Vehicle seizure operations can have significant financial consequences for motorists. In addition to losing access to a vehicle temporarily or permanently depending on the circumstances and subsequent legal process, drivers may face recovery, storage and other associated costs.

For owners of extremely valuable cars, the financial implications can be considerably greater.

The Monza SP2 seizure is particularly striking because the model is not an ordinary high-performance car. Its limited production run and collector status mean that examples can command multimillion-pound prices.

Ferrari produced the Monza SP1 and SP2 as part of its Icona series, drawing heavily on the company’s historic racing heritage. The SP2 has two seats and an open cockpit, while both cars were designed to offer an experience closer to classic racing-inspired road cars.

The model is powered by a high-performance V12 engine and was produced in very limited numbers. Its rarity has made it attractive to collectors as much as to traditional performance-car enthusiasts.

However, the Metropolitan Police’s focus was not on the car’s exclusivity.

The force said its officers were concerned with how vehicles were being used on London’s roads.

The operation also reflects a broader policing strategy in which antisocial driving is treated as a community safety issue rather than simply a matter of minor traffic violations.

Dangerous driving, excessive speed, uninsured vehicles and disruptive modifications can create risks for pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists. In busy central London neighbourhoods, the consequences of poor driving can be particularly serious because roads are often crowded and heavily used.

Police forces have therefore increasingly used vehicle seizure powers as a deterrent.

The Met said the weekend operation produced the highest number and value of seizures recorded since the operation began five years ago.

That figure provides an indication of the scale of the enforcement effort. Ninety vehicles being removed over a single weekend represents a substantial deployment of police resources and reflects the force’s determination to target motorists it believes are contributing to road safety and antisocial behaviour problems.

The operation also demonstrates that enforcement is not necessarily limited to low-value or heavily modified vehicles.

The seizure of a £3.7m Ferrari shows that high-value vehicles can also be taken off the road where officers believe the legal requirements for driving have not been met.

For the driver of the Ferrari, the reported combination of a provisional licence and lack of insurance was particularly significant.

A provisional licence does not provide unrestricted permission to drive independently in all circumstances. Drivers must comply with the conditions attached to provisional driving, including requirements concerning supervision and other legal obligations.

Insurance is also a fundamental requirement for motorists using vehicles on public roads in Britain.

The police operation therefore underlines a basic principle of road enforcement: the financial value or status of a vehicle does not exempt its driver from the law.

The Metropolitan Police has not indicated what will ultimately happen to the Ferrari. Its future will depend on the legal and administrative processes associated with the seizure and the circumstances of the case.

For now, the rare supercar remains a symbol of the unusual scale of the weekend operation.

The wider message from police, however, is aimed at all motorists rather than just owners of luxury cars.

Authorities want drivers to understand that dangerous or antisocial behaviour can result in immediate enforcement action, including the seizure of vehicles.

As London’s roads remain busy with residents, commuters, tourists and visitors, the Met says it will continue to focus on driving behaviour that puts others at risk or causes persistent disruption.

The weekend crackdown has demonstrated that such enforcement can reach from ordinary motorists to some of the world’s most valuable road cars.

And for one exceptionally rare Ferrari, its brief arrival in Britain has ended not with a collector’s garage or a private road, but in police custody following a high-profile road safety operation.
