A criminal investigation has been launched following the deaths of a pilot and a university student whose small aircraft crashed into farmland in Essex during an experience flight.

Vamshi Mandala, a 25-year-old Indian student who had recently completed his university studies, had chartered the flight as part of a celebration. The aircraft was being piloted by 26-year-old Dylan Patel when it crashed near High Ongar on 30 June.

The two-seat Cessna came down on farmland close to Mill Road, only minutes after departing from North Weald Airfield. The flight had been advertised as a 30-minute experience journey, but the aircraft was in the air for only about eight minutes before the fatal crash.

Both men died at the scene from multiple injuries, an inquest hearing at Essex Coroner’s Court was told.

The opening of the inquest has now been delayed while Essex Police conduct a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. The development means investigators will have additional time to examine the aircraft, flight records and other evidence before a full inquest can proceed.

Senior Coroner for Essex Lincoln Brookes described the deaths as a “real tragedy” and said the circumstances surrounding the incident were particularly disturbing.

“The unexpected deaths of both of these young men in such traumatic circumstances can only be described as truly disturbing,” he told the families during the hearing.

Brookes also expressed his condolences to the relatives of both victims, acknowledging the profound impact their deaths had on those close to them.

He explained that Essex Police had requested that proceedings be suspended while its investigation continues. Because the police inquiry could take a considerable amount of time, no date has yet been fixed for the full inquest.

The decision highlights the seriousness with which the authorities are treating the crash. A criminal investigation does not itself establish that a criminal offence has occurred, and investigators will need to establish precisely what caused the aircraft to crash and whether any actions or failures contributed to the deaths.

Emergency services were called after members of the public reported seeing the aircraft come down. Paramedics attended the scene but confirmed that both occupants had died.

Because of the severity of the crash, officers initially faced the challenge of identifying the two people who had been on board. Their identities were subsequently confirmed using DNA and fingerprint evidence, the inquest was told.

Mandala had chartered the aircraft after completing his university studies. Friends and acquaintances have described the flight as part of a celebratory experience, making the circumstances of his death particularly tragic.

The aircraft had been operating from North Weald Airfield, an established aviation site in Essex that is used by a variety of aircraft and aviation businesses. The flight was understood to have been an experience trip rather than a scheduled passenger service.

According to information presented at the inquest, the aircraft had already been flown twice on the day of the crash. Mandala’s friend had reportedly been a passenger on one of those earlier flights.

The information about the aircraft’s earlier flights is likely to form part of the wider investigation as authorities attempt to establish its operational history on the day.

Investigators will also be expected to examine weather conditions, the aircraft’s maintenance history, pilot qualifications, flight planning and communications, as well as any mechanical or operational issues that could have contributed to the accident.

At this stage, however, authorities have not publicly identified a definitive cause.

The flight experience reportedly cost at least £125 for a 30-minute trip. Customers could also receive supervised access to the aircraft’s dual controls, allowing them to experience aspects of flying under appropriate supervision.

Such experience flights are designed to give members of the public an introduction to general aviation without requiring them to hold a pilot’s licence. They operate under aviation safety regulations, with responsibility for the safe conduct of the flight resting with the operator and qualified pilot.

The crash is therefore likely to attract scrutiny not only because of the deaths but also because of the circumstances in which the aircraft was being operated.

The criminal investigation will be separate from the aviation safety investigation that would normally seek to establish the technical and operational causes of an aircraft accident. Investigators may need to work alongside aviation authorities and other specialist agencies as evidence is gathered.

For the families of Mandala and Patel, the uncertainty surrounding the investigation adds another difficult dimension to an already devastating loss.

The coroner warned relatives that the process could take a significant amount of time. While a full inquest is intended to examine who died, when, where and how the deaths occurred, proceedings can be postponed when another investigation could be affected by evidence given publicly during the inquest.

The crash happened shortly before 12:30pm on 30 June, with the aircraft departing North Weald Airfield only minutes earlier. Its short flight ended in farmland around High Ongar.

The location meant members of the public were able to witness the aircraft coming down and quickly alert the emergency services.

Police subsequently established a cordon around the crash site while specialist teams examined the wreckage and surrounding land.

Aircraft accidents involving fatalities typically require detailed reconstruction. Investigators can examine the condition of the engine, controls and airframe, while flight data, witness accounts and communications can help establish what happened during the final minutes.

Even apparently minor evidence can be significant. The position of wreckage, damage patterns and aircraft components can help specialists determine how the aircraft was travelling and whether it experienced a mechanical failure, loss of control or another problem before impact.

Until those investigations are completed, it would be premature to attribute responsibility for the crash.

The suspension of the inquest also means that many questions surrounding the final moments of the flight remain unanswered. Among them is why the aircraft came down only eight minutes after take-off and whether the pilot or aircraft encountered an unexpected problem.

Authorities have not indicated that either victim was responsible for the crash, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The case also illustrates the distinction between a criminal investigation and an accident inquiry. A criminal investigation seeks to determine whether an offence may have been committed, while an aviation safety investigation is primarily concerned with understanding how an accident occurred and preventing similar incidents in the future.

Both processes can involve extensive evidence gathering and may take months.

For the families, the eventual findings could provide important answers about the circumstances that led to the deaths of two young men with their lives ahead of them.

Mandala’s decision to take the flight came at what should have been a celebratory moment after completing his studies. Instead, the short experience flight ended in a tragedy that has left his family and friends facing an unexpected loss.

Patel, meanwhile, was a young professional pilot entrusted with operating the aircraft. His death has also raised questions that investigators will seek to answer through their examination of the flight.

The Essex crash is now likely to remain under investigation until authorities are satisfied that the available evidence has been properly assessed.

The families have been told that the full inquest cannot yet be scheduled. Once the police investigation and any related inquiries have progressed sufficiently, the coroner will be able to determine the next stage of proceedings.

For now, the central question remains unanswered: what caused the aircraft to crash so soon after leaving North Weald Airfield?

The forthcoming investigations are expected to establish the sequence of events and determine whether any criminal, operational or technical factors contributed to the fatal accident.

Until then, the deaths of Vamshi Mandala and Dylan Patel remain a deeply tragic reminder of how quickly an ordinary flight intended to mark a milestone can turn into an irreversible loss.
