The football community has been struck by tragedy following the death of Chichester City forward and former Arsenal player Billy Vigar, who passed away at the age of 21 after sustaining a severe brain injury during a match last Saturday.
Vigar collapsed early in the Isthmian League fixture between Chichester City and Wingate & Finchley, leading to the game’s abandonment just 13 minutes in. He was placed in an induced coma and underwent surgery in an attempt to aid his recovery, but the injury ultimately proved fatal. The young striker died on Thursday morning, sending shockwaves through his family, teammates, and the wider footballing world.
In an official statement, Chichester City expressed their grief: “After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday morning. The responses to the original update show how much Billy was thought of and loved within the sport. His family are devastated that this has happened whilst he was playing the sport that he loved.”
Vigar’s career began when he joined Arsenal’s academy in December 2017 at the age of 14, after being scouted from his hometown club Hove Rivervale FC. He quickly made his mark, scoring 17 goals in his debut season at Hale End. By July 2022, his progression was rewarded with a professional contract. During his time with the Gunners, he featured in the PL2 and the EFL Trophy, and demonstrated his versatility by playing in multiple forward positions and even in defence when required.
After loan spells with Derby County’s under-21 side and Eastbourne Borough, Vigar moved to Hastings United in 2024 before joining Chichester City ahead of the current campaign. His promise, determination, and commitment made him a respected figure among teammates and coaches alike.
Arsenal led the tributes with an emotional message to their former player: “Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is deeply sorry to hear of the tragic passing of Chichester City forward and former Arsenal academy player, Billy Vigar. Quick, powerful, and fiercely determined, Billy will always be remembered for his love of the game, pride at representing our football club, and the character that made him beloved by teammates and staff alike. Our deepest condolences go out to the Vigar family and his many friends at this extremely difficult time.”
Other clubs where Vigar once played also paid tribute. Derby County wrote on X: “All at Derby County are deeply saddened by the passing of Billy Vigar. Billy spent the second half of the 2022-23 season with the Academy on loan from Arsenal, making several appearances for the Under-21s. The thoughts of everyone at the club are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
Chichester City have since confirmed that their home fixture against Lewes on Saturday has been postponed in light of the devastating loss.
Billy Vigar’s death leaves behind not only the sorrow of unfulfilled potential but also a memory of a young footballer whose dedication, passion, and character left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. His passing is a painful reminder of the risks inherent in the game, but also of the profound love he had for football — the sport he gave his life to.
