Fire Contained at Edinburgh’s Arthur’s Seat After Overnight Battle by Firefighters

Fire crews have successfully brought under control a significant blaze on Edinburgh’s iconic Arthur’s Seat after working through the night to prevent further spread. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) confirmed on Monday morning that two fire appliances remained at the scene in Holyrood Park, continuing efforts to dampen down lingering hotspots.

The fire, which broke out on Sunday afternoon, swept rapidly across a large area of gorse on the slopes of the ancient volcanic hill. Situated just southeast of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, Arthur’s Seat is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, offering sweeping views of the city. Witnesses reported seeing visitors running to safety as thick smoke billowed across the skyline.

According to SFRS, the emergency call came in at approximately 4:05pm on 10 August. Four fire appliances, supported by specialist resources, were dispatched to tackle the fast-moving flames. Despite the scale of the blaze, there have been no reports of injuries. Authorities have urged members of the public to avoid the area while crews complete their safety operations.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. However, the incident comes at a time when Edinburgh is bustling with visitors attending its world-renowned summer festivals, including the Fringe. This weekend has also drawn thousands of Oasis fans to the city, with the Gallagher brothers performing a series of concerts at Murrayfield Stadium.

As the charred hillside cools and firefighters maintain their watch, Arthur’s Seat remains temporarily closed to ensure public safety. Officials are expected to assess the environmental impact of the fire in the coming days.
