Marks & Spencer has announced a new traineeship programme aimed at helping 1,000 young people gain workplace experience, skills and employment opportunities across the United Kingdom.
The retail company said the initiative will focus on supporting young people seeking careers in retail, logistics, customer service and business operations during a challenging economic period for youth employment.
The programme is expected to provide practical training, mentoring and hands-on work placements within stores, distribution centres and corporate departments.
Company representatives said the traineeship was designed to help participants build confidence, improve employability and develop long-term career pathways.
The announcement comes as businesses and policymakers continue expressing concern over youth unemployment, skills shortages and barriers facing school leavers entering the workforce.
Education and employment experts welcomed the initiative, saying structured workplace training programmes can play an important role in helping young people transition into stable employment.
Marks & Spencer stated that the scheme would prioritise inclusivity and accessibility, with opportunities available across multiple regions of the UK.
Participants are expected to receive support in developing communication, teamwork and digital workplace skills alongside industry-specific experience.
Retail analysts noted that major employers are increasingly investing in training schemes as companies compete for skilled workers and attempt to address labour shortages.
The UK retail sector has faced significant pressure in recent years from rising operational costs, changing consumer habits and increased competition from online shopping platforms.
Despite economic challenges, several large employers have expanded apprenticeship and trainee programmes as part of broader workforce development strategies.
Government officials praised private sector involvement in youth employment initiatives, arguing that partnerships between education providers and businesses are increasingly important for economic growth.
The programme is expected to begin recruitment later this year, with placements available across various parts of the country.
