A tragic incident unfolded in Omagh on Saturday when the charred body of a woman was discovered at the scene of a burning car on Rylagh Road. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 2 pm BST, when members of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service arrived to find a Mitsubishi Lancer GS2 engulfed in flames. Amid efforts to extinguish the fire, the woman’s body was found inside, and police have confirmed the death resulted from the fire, treating the case as arson.
The rural Rylagh Road, known for its peaceful surroundings and close-knit community, remains partially closed as investigators continue their inquiries. Detective Inspector Keon urged anyone who was in the area between noon and shortly after 2 pm on Saturday, or who may have noticed suspicious activity or dashcam footage, to come forward and assist the ongoing investigation.

Independent councillor Josephine Deehan described the situation as “tragic and horrific,” emphasizing the impact on the community, which is eager for answers to bring an end to speculation. She also praised the emergency services for their prompt and professional response.
SDLP assembly member Daniel McCrossan echoed these sentiments, calling the incident “deeply disturbing” and extending condolences to the family and friends affected. He stressed the importance of public cooperation, urging anyone with relevant information, however minor it may seem, to contact the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
