A 22-year-old Singaporean man has pleaded guilty in the United States to helping organise one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts ever prosecuted by American authorities, admitting his role in a conspiracy that stole approximately $245m (£181m) in bitcoin.

Malone Lam pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a racketeering conspiracy charge in a US court after prosecutors accused him of leading an international criminal network that targeted cryptocurrency holders, obtained sensitive information through deception and, in some cases, carried out break-ins to gain access to details needed to empty digital wallets.

According to the US Department of Justice, Lam and his associates subsequently laundered the stolen cryptocurrency and spent the proceeds on an extraordinary collection of luxury goods, exotic cars, private aircraft, high-end property and lavish nightlife.

Lam faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. US District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly had not immediately scheduled a sentencing hearing following his guilty plea.

US authorities described the case as an example of how international cybercrime groups can exploit cryptocurrency systems and victims’ personal information to move enormous sums of money rapidly.

“If you build a cybercrime empire, we will find you, dismantle your operation, and hold you accountable,” US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said.

She alleged that Lam had led an international network that used deception, invaded victims’ privacy and stole hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency.

An International Cryptocurrency Conspiracy

Court documents say the conspiracy began no later than October 2023 and continued until at least May 2025.

The alleged participants were based across several US states, including California, Connecticut, New York and Florida, while others were located outside the United States.

Investigators said the group initially developed relationships through online gaming platforms. Those digital connections allegedly became the foundation of a criminal enterprise capable of identifying wealthy cryptocurrency holders and coordinating attacks against them.

Lam, prosecutors said, acted as the central figure in the operation.

According to the DOJ, he used several aliases, including Anne Hathaway, $$$ and King Greavy. Authorities allege that he identified potential victims, organised the activities of other conspirators and helped coordinate the theft and subsequent movement of cryptocurrency.

The case illustrates the increasingly blurred boundary between online social interaction and sophisticated financial crime. What may begin as an apparently ordinary online relationship can, according to investigators, provide criminals with information that can later be used to target victims.

How Victims Were Targeted

The Justice Department said the conspirators relied heavily on social engineering and deception.

Rather than simply attempting to break through cryptocurrency networks by exploiting technical vulnerabilities, the group allegedly manipulated victims into revealing confidential information.

That information could then be used to gain access to cryptocurrency accounts and wallets.

Authorities also alleged that the conspirators occasionally went further, carrying out home break-ins to obtain information that could assist them in taking control of victims’ digital assets.

The combination of online deception and physical intrusion demonstrates the changing nature of cryptocurrency crime. Although digital currencies exist on decentralised networks, access to individual holdings can depend on passwords, authentication details, recovery information and other credentials associated with the people who control them.

For criminals, obtaining those details can therefore be as valuable as exploiting a technological vulnerability.

For victims, the consequences can be severe because cryptocurrency transactions are generally difficult to reverse once assets have been transferred.

$245m in Stolen Bitcoin

The amount involved in the case makes it particularly significant.

Lam admitted involvement in a conspiracy connected to the theft and laundering of approximately $245m worth of bitcoin.

The value of cryptocurrency can fluctuate substantially, meaning the precise dollar value associated with stolen assets can change depending on when it is measured. Nevertheless, the sum places the alleged operation among the most substantial cryptocurrency theft cases to reach a US courtroom.

The prosecution also provides an insight into how quickly large quantities of digital currency can be converted into physical wealth.

According to the DOJ, the stolen proceeds were used to fund an exceptionally extravagant lifestyle rather than being retained solely as digital assets.

The alleged spending included exotic vehicles, luxury watches, designer clothing, private aircraft and expensive accommodation in several of America’s wealthiest locations.

Lavish Spending on Nightlife

One of the most striking elements of the prosecution’s account concerns the group’s spending on nightclubs.

The DOJ said Lam and his associates could spend as much as $500,000 during a single visit to a nightclub.

Such spending allegedly formed part of a broader pattern in which the stolen cryptocurrency was rapidly converted into conspicuous displays of wealth.

The group is also accused of purchasing Hermes Birkin handbags worth tens of thousands of dollars and throwing them into crowds during nightclub parties.

High-end watches worth as much as $500,000 and luxury clothing costing tens of thousands of dollars were among the other purchases identified by prosecutors.

The spending, according to authorities, was not merely an attempt to conceal the origin of the money. It also became part of an extravagant lifestyle that prosecutors say was funded by the proceeds of the cryptocurrency theft.

A Fleet of Exotic Cars

The alleged operation also generated a collection of expensive vehicles.

The DOJ said the conspirators acquired a fleet of exotic cars, with individual vehicles ranging in value from approximately $100,000 to $3.8m.

The purchases illustrate the difficulty authorities can face when attempting to trace cryptocurrency proceeds after they have been converted into physical assets.

Digital transactions may leave records on blockchain networks, but once cryptocurrency is exchanged for vehicles, watches, jewellery or other high-value goods, investigators must follow a more complicated chain of financial and commercial transactions.

Authorities can seek to identify those assets and potentially recover them as part of a criminal investigation, although the process can become increasingly complex when property is transferred between individuals or jurisdictions.

Luxury Homes and Private Jets

The alleged spending spree extended beyond cars and designer goods.

According to the Justice Department, proceeds from the conspiracy were used to rent luxury homes in Los Angeles, the Hamptons and Miami.

The group also allegedly hired private jets for travel and maintained a team of private security guards.

Taken together, the expenditures described by prosecutors portray an operation in which cryptocurrency theft was allegedly transformed into a highly visible lifestyle centred on luxury, travel and entertainment.

The case also demonstrates the speed at which cryptocurrency can potentially be moved across borders. Unlike conventional bank transfers, cryptocurrency transactions can occur around the clock and across jurisdictions, creating challenges for investigators attempting to identify the individuals controlling funds.

Guilty Plea Brings Case Closer to Sentencing

Lam’s guilty plea represents a significant development in the prosecution.

By admitting the racketeering conspiracy charge, he has accepted criminal responsibility for his involvement rather than forcing prosecutors to establish the charge at trial.

However, the plea does not mean that every detail contained in the government’s allegations has been independently established as fact. The Justice Department’s account describes the conduct prosecutors attributed to Lam and his associates, while the court process will determine the appropriate punishment.

Lam faces up to 20 years in federal prison under the charge to which he pleaded guilty.

The sentencing hearing will eventually determine the actual term imposed, taking into account the applicable federal sentencing framework and circumstances presented to the court.

The absence of an immediately scheduled sentencing date means the case remains active even after the guilty plea.

The Wider Problem of Cryptocurrency Crime

The case comes amid continuing concerns about cryptocurrency-related financial crime.

Digital currencies have created new opportunities for legitimate investment, international payments and financial innovation, but they have also attracted organised criminal groups.

Criminals can use cryptocurrencies to move and convert illicit proceeds, while victims can be particularly vulnerable to sophisticated social-engineering attacks.

The Lam case is notable because prosecutors allege that the operation did not rely on a single method. It combined online relationships, deception, theft of confidential information and, on occasion, physical intrusion.

That combination suggests that cryptocurrency crime can involve both highly technical and traditional criminal techniques.

The enormous sums involved can also provide strong incentives for organised groups to recruit participants, establish international networks and develop elaborate methods for laundering money.

A Warning to Cryptocurrency Holders

The prosecution serves as a reminder that the security of cryptocurrency does not depend solely on the technology underlying a blockchain.

Individual users remain vulnerable if criminals can obtain authentication information, manipulate them into revealing sensitive details or otherwise gain access to the systems through which digital assets are controlled.

For investigators, meanwhile, the case highlights the importance of tracing cryptocurrency transactions alongside conventional evidence such as communications, property records and financial purchases.

The alleged spending trail in Lam’s case provided investigators with a picture of how stolen digital assets could be converted into tangible wealth.

International Investigation, US Prosecution

The international nature of the alleged conspiracy is another important feature of the case.

Participants were reportedly spread across multiple US states and other countries, while the victims and financial transactions could potentially extend across national borders.

Such cases require investigators to work across jurisdictions and connect digital evidence with real-world activity.

The prosecution also demonstrates the willingness of US authorities to pursue cryptocurrency-related crimes under traditional federal criminal laws, including racketeering statutes.

For organised groups, the case sends a clear warning that operating through online platforms and digital currencies does not necessarily provide protection from prosecution.

A High-Profile Case With a Long Road Ahead

Lam’s guilty plea closes one major stage of a case involving an extraordinary amount of cryptocurrency and an alleged criminal operation that authorities say operated for more than a year and a half.

The prosecution’s account describes a network that allegedly turned stolen bitcoin into an extravagant lifestyle, with spending on cars, watches, designer goods, luxury homes, private aviation and nightlife reaching extraordinary levels.

The case now moves towards sentencing, where the court will determine the consequences of Lam’s guilty plea.

Beyond the eventual prison sentence, the prosecution is likely to remain significant because it illustrates the evolving nature of cryptocurrency crime. The alleged theft did not depend entirely on sophisticated computer attacks. Instead, prosecutors say criminals combined online deception with the exploitation of personal information and, in some cases, physical intrusion.

The case is therefore a warning not only to cryptocurrency investors but also to financial institutions, technology companies and law-enforcement agencies attempting to confront a rapidly changing form of organised crime.

For Lam, the guilty plea marks the beginning of the final phase of a US prosecution that could result in decades behind bars. For investigators, the case represents another effort to demonstrate that even enormous cryptocurrency fortunes can be traced, investigated and, ultimately, brought within the reach of the criminal justice system.
