A man has tragically died and a woman sustained injuries following a shooting in Clissold Park, Hackney, east London, in a shocking incident that has left the local community reeling. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that officers were called to the park at 7:06 pm on Wednesday evening after receiving reports of gunfire, prompting an immediate response from multiple emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance.

According to police reports, the man, believed to be in his 40s, was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities stated that inquiries are ongoing to formally identify his next of kin and to provide appropriate support for his family during this distressing time. The woman, also in her 40s, was transported to hospital following treatment by paramedics, and her condition remains under observation, with the police awaiting further updates from medical staff.

A firearm, believed to be linked to the shooting, was recovered at the scene, with officers securing the area as part of their investigation. Detective Superintendent Oliver Richter, who oversees policing in Hackney and Tower Hamlets, stressed that the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the wider public.

“We understand this is a deeply distressing incident for those involved, for witnesses in the park, and for the surrounding community,” DS Richter said in a statement. “We are in the early stages of our investigation, but evidence currently suggests that the man and woman are known to one another. At this time, we are treating this as an isolated incident, and there is no wider risk to the public.”

DS Richter emphasized the commitment of the police to work swiftly and thoroughly. “Officers are working at pace to establish the full circumstances of this incident. We will continue to support all those affected. A crime scene remains in place as our specialist teams conduct a detailed investigation, and there will be an increased police presence in the area to reassure the community and gather evidence.”

Clissold Park, a popular public space in Hackney known for its greenery and recreational facilities, was immediately cordoned off by police following the shooting. Hackney Council issued a statement confirming that the park would remain closed while authorities conduct their investigation, adding that updates regarding its reopening would be communicated promptly.

“Hackney Council is fully supporting the police with their investigations,” the council said. “The safety of the community remains our priority, and we are working closely with officers to ensure that the park can reopen safely as soon as possible.”

Hackney Mayor Caroline Woodley also addressed the incident on social media, expressing sympathy for those affected. In a post on X, she wrote: “Such a terrible event. Thank you so much to the emergency services for the swift response. I hope the woman and all those affected have all the support they need – I will be following up to make sure.”

Residents and witnesses reported being shaken by the incident, describing the immediate aftermath as chaotic and alarming. Some park-goers noted that the sound of gunfire echoed through the otherwise quiet evening, sending families and individuals fleeing for safety. Many expressed concerns about public safety and the implications of such incidents in urban community spaces.

Local community leaders have called for enhanced measures to prevent similar tragedies, emphasizing the importance of proactive policing, community engagement, and support services for residents affected by violent crime. Hackney has experienced periodic incidents of gun-related violence in recent years, and authorities are under increasing pressure to implement strategies that address the root causes of such incidents while maintaining public trust.

Investigators from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command are leading the inquiry, focusing on establishing the precise circumstances that led to the shooting. Officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the park and nearby streets, conducting interviews with witnesses, and gathering forensic evidence to understand the sequence of events. Police have appealed to anyone with information about the incident to come forward, emphasizing that even seemingly minor details could prove vital in building a comprehensive understanding of what transpired.

“This is a priority investigation,” DS Richter added. “We are appealing to anyone who witnessed the events or has information that could assist the investigation to contact us immediately. The cooperation of the public is crucial to ensure that justice is served and that the community feels safe.”

The investigation also includes an assessment of whether the firearm used was obtained illegally, with officers working in collaboration with the National Crime Agency to trace the weapon’s origins. Authorities have reiterated that their initial findings indicate no ongoing risk to local residents, but they are maintaining a visible presence in Hackney as a precautionary measure.

Healthcare and emergency services involved in the response to the shooting were praised for their rapid and coordinated efforts. Paramedics and air ambulance crews acted swiftly to stabilize the injured woman and provide life-saving interventions at the scene, highlighting the crucial role of emergency medical response in high-risk urban environments.

The tragic events in Clissold Park are a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by violent crime in London’s public spaces. Community groups have urged residents to remain vigilant, while also encouraging cooperation with police investigations. Mental health and victim support services have been made available to those affected, recognizing the emotional and psychological impact of such violent incidents.

As the investigation continues, authorities have urged the public to respect the ongoing police work and avoid speculating about the circumstances or individuals involved. The police emphasized that providing accurate and verified information is essential to ensuring both the integrity of the investigation and the safety of the wider community.

The Metropolitan Police’s handling of the incident is part of a broader initiative to enhance safety and crime prevention in Hackney, including targeted operations to address gun crime and community outreach programs aimed at fostering trust and cooperation between residents and law enforcement. While this incident has understandably caused alarm, officials are confident that their proactive measures, combined with public support, will help prevent further incidents and provide reassurance to the local community.

In summary, the shooting at Clissold Park has resulted in the death of a man and the injury of a woman, prompting a thorough investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Emergency services responded swiftly, and local authorities, including Hackney Council and the mayor’s office, have pledged support to those affected. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the event, while the community grapples with the emotional impact of yet another violent incident in the area. Residents are urged to remain informed, cooperate with authorities, and prioritize safety as the investigation proceeds.
