Nick Reiner, the 32‑year‑old son of famed Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, has formally pleaded not guilty to charges that he murdered both of his parents, prosecutors and court records confirm. The plea was entered on 23 February 2026 at the Los Angeles County Superior Court in a brief arraignment, part of ongoing pre‑trial proceedings in the high‑profile case that has drawn intense media scrutiny across the United States.
Reiner is charged on two counts of first‑degree murder in connection with the December 14, 2025 deaths of his parents at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home, where Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 70, were found with multiple stab wounds. The District Attorney’s Office has also alleged special circumstances, including that a deadly weapon was used, which under California law could make the case eligible for a death penalty pursuit or life imprisonment without parole if he is convicted.
At the hearing, Reiner appeared in court wearing a brown jail uniform and was represented by public defender Kimberly Greene after his previous private attorney, Alan Jackson, unexpectedly withdrew from the case in early January. Jackson at that time asserted outside court that, under California law, his client was not guilty. Reiner has been held in custody without bail since his arrest shortly after the killings.
Reiner’s not guilty plea — typical for defendants at this stage — sets the stage for a preliminary hearing on April 29, when prosecutors will present evidence to a judge to determine if the case should proceed to trial. Authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive, and details of the investigation, including autopsy results, have been limited by court order.
The deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner, who were married for 36 years, shocked both Hollywood and legal observers, given Rob Reiner’s celebrated career as a director of films such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride and When Harry Met Sally… and the alleged violent nature of the incident. Reiner’s siblings, including daughter Romy and son Jake, have publicly mourned their parents and asked for privacy as the legal process unfolds.
