Achieving perfectly cooked rice has long been a challenge for many home cooks, with soggy, clumpy, or undercooked grains frustrating even the most experienced chefs. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, however, has shared a simple yet foolproof method to produce rice that is consistently light, fluffy, and full of flavor. In a video posted to his official YouTube channel, Ramsay demonstrated his step-by-step technique, offering guidance that transforms a basic staple into a dish worthy of any table.
According to Ramsay, the key to flawless rice begins before it even hits the pan. Washing the rice thoroughly under cold running water is essential to remove surface starch, which can cause the grains to stick together. “What I’m gonna do is just rinse off the dust and the starch, use cold water always, and just rinse the rice to stop it from becoming clumpy in the pan,” Ramsay explained. This foundational step ensures that each grain remains separate and perfectly textured after cooking.
Beyond washing, Ramsay emphasizes infusing the rice with subtle yet aromatic flavors. Rather than seasoning after cooking, he recommends adding whole spices at the start. Three cardamom pods, gently pierced to release their fragrance, and a piece of star anise can elevate plain rice, creating a delicate aroma and enhancing the overall taste. These small touches, Ramsay notes, transform ordinary rice into a fragrant and inviting dish without overpowering its natural flavor.
Equally important is the accurate measurement of water, which Ramsay identifies as critical to avoiding both mushy and undercooked rice. His advice is simple: one part rice to one and a half parts water. In practice, this means 400 grams of rice combined with 600 milliliters of water. Achieving the correct ratio ensures the rice cooks evenly and maintains the desired texture.
Temperature control is another essential element. Ramsay instructs cooks to start with cold water, then bring it to a rapid boil before reducing the heat to allow the rice to simmer for eight to ten minutes. He cautions against lifting the lid during this time, explaining that allowing the rice to steam undisturbed ensures uniform cooking.
Finally, resting the rice off the heat for ten minutes before fluffing it with a fork completes the process. This final step allows any remaining steam to gently finish cooking the grains and keeps them from becoming sticky. “Once you’ve forked it through, it becomes really nice, light and fluffy, and then that is perfectly cooked rice,” Ramsay said, summarizing the simple yet precise technique.
