In a tragic and deeply unsettling incident that has shocked the United Kingdom, two men lost their lives in a violent attack on a synagogue in Manchester. Greater Manchester Police have identified the victims as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. The attack, which occurred on Thursday morning, coincided with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, heightening the anguish felt by the community.

According to police reports, the assailant, later identified as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent, drove a vehicle into pedestrians before proceeding to stab several others. During the intervention by responding officers, one of the victims was struck by police gunfire while the authorities neutralized the attacker at the scene. Three additional individuals remain hospitalized with serious injuries, one of whom also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Neighbours and members of the local community have expressed profound grief and disbelief over the attack. Abdul Rahimi, who had been Adrian Daulby’s neighbour for over two decades, described him as “like an angel” and emphasized his kind-hearted nature and consistent willingness to help others. Rahimi spoke of how his children shared gifts with Daulby during various religious celebrations, including Christmas and Eid, reflecting the deep connections he had within the neighbourhood. “All his neighbours were shocked. His death is very, very sad news for us,” Rahimi said.

The incident has been classified as a terrorist attack by UK authorities. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that Al-Shamie was previously unknown to counter-terrorism police, and she cautioned that it was “too early” to determine if the assailant acted alone or as part of a wider terrorist cell. Security measures have since been intensified across synagogues and Jewish institutions nationwide, and the government is reviewing measures to counter rising antisemitism. Mahmood underscored the importance of ensuring that Jewish citizens in the UK can live and practice their faith without fear, stating, “I do not want Jewish people in our country to feel like they have to live a smaller Jewish life.”

The Jewish community has been left reeling by the attack. Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis described the events as “an awful blow,” emphasizing that it represents “a very dark time not only for Jews in Britain but for all of our society.” He noted that the attack had been feared due to earlier signs of rising tensions, and he called for a unified response to ensure community safety and cohesion.

Authorities are supporting the families of the deceased through every stage of the investigation and post-incident processes. Detective Superintendent Lewis Hughes of Greater Manchester Police conveyed his condolences to the families of Mr. Daulby and Mr. Cravitz, highlighting the role of trained family liaison officers in providing ongoing support. He reassured the public that the police are committed to respecting cultural sensitivities and ensuring that the wishes of the victims’ loved ones are fully considered throughout the coronial procedures.

Post-mortems are scheduled to take place on Friday, according to the Home Office. Meanwhile, the investigation is continuing at pace, with police gathering CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts to understand the full scope of the attack. The authorities have emphasized the importance of community vigilance and cooperation to prevent similar acts of violence in the future.

As the nation grapples with the consequences of this attack, discussions have intensified around antisemitism, domestic terrorism, and the protection of religious communities. Mahmood acknowledged that the government provides funding for security in places of worship and suggested that further steps may be necessary to address the rising threats faced by Jewish communities across the UK. The incident has prompted calls for increased awareness, education, and preventive measures to ensure that such violent and targeted acts do not recur.

The Manchester synagogue attack is not only a moment of grief but also a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by minority communities in an era of heightened tensions and radical ideologies. The loss of Adrian Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, two individuals described by their neighbours as kind and community-minded, underscores the human cost of such violence and serves as a rallying point for collective efforts to reinforce safety, tolerance, and interfaith solidarity in Britain.

Authorities continue to investigate the motivations behind Al-Shamie’s actions and are working closely with counter-terrorism units to determine whether this attack was influenced by extremist networks or ideology. In the meantime, synagogues and Jewish institutions across the country remain on high alert, with enhanced security protocols implemented to protect congregants during religious observances.

The nation mourns alongside the families and communities affected by this tragedy. Leaders across the political spectrum have condemned the attack, reiterating their commitment to upholding the safety and freedoms of all citizens. The events in Manchester serve as a sobering reminder of the persistent threats of extremism and the need for vigilance, compassion, and unity in confronting violence targeted at any community.

Greater Manchester Police continue to appeal for information from the public and have emphasized that their priority remains safeguarding the affected families, ensuring justice, and maintaining community trust as the investigation proceeds. The coming days are expected to see further updates regarding the victims, the condition of those injured, and the broader security measures being implemented nationwide.

The English Chronicle Desk Israel’s security cabinet has approved a contentious plan to seize control of Gaza City, signaling a sharp escalation in the ongoing 22-month military offensive that has devastated Gaza, claimed tens of thousands of Palestinian lives, and plunged the region into a humanitarian crisis. The decision, announced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, marks a significant development in Israel’s protracted conflict with Hamas, the militant group governing Gaza. The plan, still pending approval from the full cabinet expected to convene by Sunday, outlines the deployment of Israeli ground forces to reclaim the remaining 25% of Gaza territory not yet under their control. However, it stops short of Netanyahu’s earlier declaration of intent to retake the entire Gaza Strip and eventually transfer authority to friendly Arab factions opposed to Hamas. This cautious step appears influenced by concerns voiced by Israel’s military leadership, including Chief of Staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir, who warned that a full occupation could trigger a prolonged insurgency, exacerbate humanitarian responsibilities, and endanger the approximately 20 hostages still held by Hamas. The military operation is being framed as a limited campaign rather than a full-scale invasion to mitigate fears among military officials and political actors wary of long-term entanglement. Nevertheless, it will involve significant troop deployments into Gaza City, one of the last areas not yet transformed into an Israeli buffer zone or evacuated. The operation threatens to displace around one million Palestinians who currently reside in Gaza City and its environs, forcing them to move southward, with the evacuation slated for completion by 7 October. The Israeli offensive has wrought immense destruction on Gaza’s infrastructure, decimating health services and restricting access to vital humanitarian aid. The United Nations and aid agencies report severe impediments to relief efforts amid relentless Israeli bombardments. Domestic opposition to the plan has been vocal. Families of hostages protested outside the security cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, expressing fear that the intensified military campaign could jeopardize their loved ones’ lives. Former senior Israeli security officials cautioned that the plan risks plunging Israel into a protracted and costly quagmire with minimal strategic gains. Opposition leader Yair Lapid condemned the move, predicting it would result in numerous casualties, massive financial costs, and diplomatic fallout. International reaction has also been critical. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the decision as counterproductive, urging Israel to reconsider its approach to prevent further bloodshed. Volker Türk, UN human rights chief, called for an immediate halt to the plan, emphasizing the potential for catastrophic humanitarian consequences. For Palestinians in Gaza, already displaced multiple times, the announcement represents yet another chapter in a relentless cycle of suffering. Aya Mohammad, a resident of Gaza City, voiced the despair felt by many: “Where should we go? We have been displaced and humiliated enough. Displacement means losing your dignity, becoming a homeless beggar in search of food, water, and medicine.” Despite the looming ground operation, Netanyahu reiterated in an interview with Fox News that Israel’s goal is to eliminate Hamas’s threat, establish security, and ultimately transfer governance of Gaza to Arab forces that would ensure stability without endangering Israeli security. “We don’t want to keep it. We want to have a security perimeter,” he said. Since the start of the offensive, Israel’s military actions have resulted in the deaths of at least 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, with the toll predominantly comprising civilians. These figures exclude the countless others presumed buried beneath rubble or succumbing to war’s indirect consequences. As tensions rise and the international community watches closely, the fate of Gaza and its people hangs precariously in the balance, with hopes for peace dimming amid the shadow of renewed conflict and humanitarian disaster.Netanyahu Announces Plan to Take Over Gaza City, Escalating Conflict Further Prominent Al Jazeera Journalist Anas al-Sharif Among Five Reporters Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza High-Stakes Diplomacy: Trump and Putin Head to Alaska for Historic Peace Talks Man City Masterclass on Guardiola’s Milestone Day Exposes Liverpool WoesManchester City Announce Their Return in Style with Haaland Double and Debut Goals at Wolves Prince Andrew steps aside as royal succession shiftsWhere Is Prince William and Kate Middleton’s New House?
