A heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded at one of the UK’s most popular indoor water parks, as a four-year-old girl lost her life following a critical incident at Waterworld in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. The child was found unconscious in the lagoon area of the aqua park on Festival Way around 4.15pm and, despite immediate lifesaving efforts, she tragically passed away shortly after being taken to hospital.
According to Staffordshire Police, emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4.20pm after reports emerged of a young girl in a life-threatening condition. Lifeguards and staff at Waterworld acted swiftly, performing CPR on-site until paramedics arrived and transported the child for further treatment.
Hospital staff continued efforts to save the girl, but sadly, she was pronounced dead a short time later. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Maskew, leading the investigation, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the family. She also urged the public to refrain from speculation as an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident continues.
“This is an incredibly painful moment for the family, and we ask for space and sensitivity as they grieve,” said DCI Maskew.
A spokesperson for Waterworld expressed profound shock and sadness over the tragic death, confirming that the facility would remain closed the following day as a mark of respect. “All our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during these extremely difficult times,” the spokesperson said.
Waterworld later issued a detailed statement on social media, explaining that the girl was found unconscious in the lagoon area and was immediately attended to by lifeguards and management, who initiated CPR before emergency crews arrived.
The statement also acknowledged the cooperation of visitors who quietly exited the park to allow emergency responders to work without obstruction. Waterworld thanked its patrons for their understanding and respect during such a sensitive situation.
Known as the UK’s number one tropical indoor aqua park, Waterworld has long been a popular destination for families. The tragic event has shaken the community, drawing sympathy and condolences from around the country.
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with both the police and Waterworld working closely to determine what led to the incident.
