From Crown to Crime: Kentucky Beauty Queen Arrested After Dead Infant Found in Closet

The quiet campus of the University of Kentucky was shaken this week by the arrest of a 21-year-old student and cheerleader, once celebrated as a beauty queen, who now faces grave criminal charges following the discovery of her deceased newborn hidden inside a closet.

Authorities in Lexington confirmed that Laken Snelling, a senior at the university and a member of its competitive STUNT cheerleading team, has been charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant. The case has triggered widespread shock across the state and beyond, not only for its harrowing details but also because it has unfolded in Kentucky, a state where abortion has been outlawed since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022.

According to police records, officers responded to reports of an unresponsive infant and were confronted with a disturbing scene. The newborn was found wrapped in a towel and placed inside a black trash bag in a closet. Officers confirmed that the child was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 10:30 a.m. An arrest citation revealed that Snelling admitted to giving birth and subsequently concealing it. Investigators noted that she had attempted to clean evidence of the birth, placing both the infant and the cleaning materials inside the trash bag.

The Fayette County Coroner’s Office has yet to determine the cause of the infant’s death, while Snelling remains held at the Fayette County Detention Center as the Lexington Police Department’s Special Victims Section conducts further inquiries. A spokesperson for the University of Kentucky acknowledged the arrest in a statement, confirming that Snelling had been part of the STUNT team for three seasons but declined to provide additional details, directing further questions to law enforcement.

Snelling’s arrest has drawn attention not only because of her public persona but also because of her online presence. Just months earlier, she had posted a video on Instagram describing her dreams of becoming a mother and building a family. Friends and acquaintances now struggle to reconcile those words with the shocking revelations of the case.

The tragic incident unfolds against the backdrop of the United States’ deeply divisive battle over reproductive rights. With Kentucky’s strict abortion ban in place, women in the state have been left with virtually no access to abortion services, except in cases of life-threatening pregnancy or severe health risks. Advocates argue that this legal environment has created dangerous consequences, with young women in crisis forced into secrecy and desperate decisions.

The Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade marked what former President Barack Obama described as a “constitutional earthquake,” stripping away a federal right to abortion and returning authority to individual states. Kentucky’s legislature acted swiftly to enforce one of the nation’s strictest bans, instantly cutting off access for millions of women. Polling data suggests that a majority of Americans—61 percent in the latest survey—support legal abortion, underscoring the disconnect between public opinion and legislative outcomes.

As the investigation into Snelling’s case continues, the tragedy is being widely discussed not only in legal terms but also in moral and political dimensions. Some view it as a harrowing individual act, others as a symptom of larger societal fractures. What remains undeniable is the human cost—the death of an infant and the collapse of a young woman’s future, once adorned with crowns and accolades, now overshadowed by criminal charges and a courtroom reckoning.

For now, the case has become a painful focal point in the national conversation about reproductive rights, women’s health, and the limits of personal freedom in post-Roe America.
