The GMB union is experiencing renewed challenges as female leaders bring forward serious allegations of harassment and governance failures, escalating GMB turmoil at the senior level. These claims have emerged just months before the general secretary election, where Gary Smith may face a contested re-election in May. The first staffer pursuing an employment claim argues her dismissal was retaliatory following complaints of bullying, despite GMB insisting it was due to verified allegations of racism. This latest controversy has intensified GMB turmoil, with staff and leadership tensions increasingly exposed.

A second senior female staff member, still employed but on sick leave, also raised concerns of bullying and harassment. She told the union’s central executive committee that the organisation’s culture remains deeply flawed and damaging to employees. The union responded that all complaints were fully investigated and not upheld, reaffirming their commitment to robust governance and fair process. Nonetheless, the handling of these cases has fueled perceptions of ongoing GMB turmoil, highlighting persistent structural and cultural challenges.

These developments come amid a wider effort to reform GMB’s workplace culture following the 2020 Monaghan report, which identified “institutional sexism” within the union. A follow-up review revealed that only 11 of 27 recommendations have been fully implemented, leaving significant work ahead. While some staff feel improvements have been made, others insist that harassment and intimidation continue to undermine confidence, contributing to ongoing GMB turmoil at the top.

The union now faces the dual challenge of addressing these internal disputes and maintaining credibility ahead of the upcoming leadership election. Legal proceedings related to the first staffer’s dismissal are ongoing, adding further scrutiny to the union’s processes. Observers note that the outcome of the election and the union’s response to these allegations will have long-term implications for both its reputation and internal cohesion.
