In a landmark settlement for the “vapourware” era of artificial intelligence, Apple has agreed to pay $250 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit filed by millions of disgruntled iPhone buyers. The suit, filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, accused the tech giant of misleading consumers by aggressively marketing “Apple Intelligence” and a revolutionary new Siri that remained largely absent for nearly two years.
Under the terms of the deal filed Tuesday, eligible US customers who bought an iPhone 16 or an iPhone 15 Pro between June 2024 and March 2025 can claim a payout—a “milestone” of corporate accountability in the race for AI dominance.
The legal battle focused on the “clinical” gap between Apple’s 2024 marketing and the actual user experience.
The Broken Promise: At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled a “personalized” Siri capable of understanding context across apps, summarizing emails, and taking actions on a user’s behalf. Plaintiffs argued this version of Siri “did not exist at the time and does not exist now.“
The “Bella Ramsey” Ad: The lawsuit specifically highlighted a now-infamous ad featuring actress Bella Ramsey using Siri to recall a stranger’s name. The ad was pulled in March 2025 after Apple admitted the feature would be delayed by at least a year, creating a “resilience deficit” in consumer trust.
The “Built for AI” Label: Despite the delays, Apple continued to sell the iPhone 16 as being “built for Apple Intelligence,” which lawyers claimed was a “nasty and mischievous” attempt to drive sales during a critical launch window.
While Apple denies any wrongdoing, the settlement provides a clear “postcode lottery” for those who feel they were sold a “mirage.“
Eligibility: You must have purchased an iPhone 16 (all models), 16e, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, or 16 Pro Max, or an iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025, in the United States.
The Payout: Eligible buyers can claim a base payment of $25 per device. However, if the number of claimants is low, this sum could climb as high as $95 per device.
Timeline: Email notices will be sent to approximately 36 million eligible device owners within the next 45 days. A final approval hearing is set for June 17, 2026.
The $250 million payout comes as Apple undergoes a massive “recalibration” of its AI strategy.
Executive Turnover: The fallout reportedly contributed to the retirement of AI chief John Giannandrea in December 2025.
The Gemini Pivot: In a “divergent” move for the usually self-reliant company, Apple has since partnered with Google to power its upgraded Siri using the Gemini models, which are finally expected to ship in iOS 27 this September.
Succession in the Spotlight: The settlement lands just months before John Ternus is expected to take over from Tim Cook as CEO, marking a significant “milestone” in the company’s leadership transition.
As the RHS Wisley wisteria reaches its peak and the Southbank Centre celebrates 75 years of progress, the “Siri Tax” serves as a warning to Silicon Valley: marketing must match reality, even at a “160 MPH clip” of innovation.
“We are at an inflection point with AI,” said Ryan Clarkson, the lead attorney for the class. “Companies cannot sell the future as if it is the present.” With the King’s Speech on May 13 likely to reference “Digital Consumer Rights,” Apple’s $250 million hit is a “clinical” reminder that even the world’s most valuable company isn’t immune to the “accountability rot” of broken promises.
