A young man has tragically lost his life in a freak workplace accident at the Spanish City Summer Funfair in Whitley Bay, leaving families and colleagues in shock. Emergency services, including the Great North Air Ambulance Service, were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon, supported by an off-duty medic. Despite their prompt and determined efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. In the wake of the tragedy, the fairground has been temporarily closed.
Northumbria Police confirmed the incident, stating that shortly after 2:15 p.m., they received reports of a serious workplace accident at the Spanish City Plaza area of Whitley Bay. The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Corrie Lee Stavers, who was operating one of the fairground rides at the time of the incident. According to the police, Corrie suffered severe head injuries, and although medical personnel worked tirelessly to save him, he was declared deceased shortly after their arrival. The man’s next of kin have been contacted and are receiving support from specialist officers during this extremely difficult time.
In an official statement, Northumbria Police said they have informed the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and are working closely with them to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the accident. The fair will remain closed until further notice, and anyone with information has been urged to contact the police via social media, live chat, or the force’s website.
Corrie’s family also released a heart-wrenching statement, expressing the depth of their grief. They wrote: “It’s with broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our beloved Corrie has passed away. He was tragically taken from us in an accident while working on a fairground ride. None of us were prepared for this, and the pain of losing him so suddenly is impossible to put into words. Our lives will never be the same without him, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever. We love you endlessly, Corrie, and we miss you more than words can ever say. You’re with our mam now – rest in peace Corrie.”
The news has prompted an outpouring of emotional tributes on social media. Friends and local community members have shared their sorrow, describing Corrie as a genuinely kind and cherished individual whose absence will be profoundly felt. One friend commented, “Most genuine lad I know, he will be a massive miss,” while another added, “Absolutely loved him. He was by far one of my best friends in the years I worked with him. He will be so missed.”
