The conflict in Ukraine has taken another dangerous turn after a devastating aerial assault hit the capital city. Russia deployed its highly advanced Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile during a massive bombardment across the country. The powerful strike targeted Kyiv and the surrounding region with immense force over the weekend. At least four people lost their lives while approximately one hundred others suffered various injuries. The extensive barrage caused widespread destruction across multiple residential districts and vital public infrastructure networks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the missile struck the city of Bila Tserkva. He described a incredibly heavy Russian assault that intentionally targeted a local water supply facility. The intense bombardment also completely burned down a bustling market and damaged dozens of homes. Several schools in the Kyiv region were also heavily impacted by the falling debris. Writing on his Telegram channel, President Zelenskyy strongly condemned the actions of the Russian military. He openly described the forces responsible for organizing the violent assault as genuinely deranged.

President Zelenskyy provided further details about the casualties through an official statement on social media. He noted that about one hundred people had been injured across the entire nation. Four citizens were confirmed dead as a direct result of the recent Russian strikes. The Ukrainian leader emphasized that the capital city of Kyiv had been hit the hardest.

Moscow Confirms Advanced Weapon Deployment

The Russian defence ministry quickly issued a statement confirming the use of the Oreshnik missile. This sophisticated weapon system is capable of carrying either nuclear or conventional payloads quite easily. The recent strike marks the third time this specific missile has been used here. Russian news agencies quoted officials who claimed the military carried out highly successful operations. They asserted that the strikes accurately targeted Ukrainian military command facilities and several local airbases. The operation also reportedly utilized Iskander, Kinzhal, and Zircon missiles during the complex assault.

Moscow claimed the massive bombardment was direct retaliation for previous Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory. They alleged that Ukraine had regularly targeted civilian facilities within borders recognized by the Kremlin. However, President Zelenskyy painted a vastly different picture of the heavy attack targeting civilian infrastructure. He revealed that the assault involved six hundred drones and ninety missiles of various kinds. Thirty-six of those weapons launched by the Russian military were advanced ballistic missiles.

The Ukrainian president expressed deep regret that not all ballistic missiles were successfully intercepted. He noted that the largest number of successful hits occurred inside the capital city. Kyiv was clearly identified as the primary target of this sophisticated and relentless Russian attack. Zelenskyy concluded his statement by demanding that these actions must not pass without international consequences.

Devastation Across Capital Districts

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that two people were killed within the capital city itself. He added that fifty-six other citizens were wounded during the terrifying night of continuous explosions. Meanwhile, regional officials confirmed two additional deaths and nine injuries in areas surrounding the capital. Klitschko stated that significant structural damage had been recorded in every single district of Kyiv. One specific strike on a local school started a major fire that required emergency attention. Another strike on a business centre left multiple people trapped inside an underground bomb shelter.

Local residents expressed immense shock and profound sadness over the sheer scale of the destruction. Svitlana Onofryichuk had worked for over two decades in the market that was destroyed. She told reporters that it was a terrible night unlike anything seen before this. The vendor explained that she felt forced to say goodbye to her beloved city now. She stated that there was no possibility of staying since her entire livelihood vanished. Her job was completely gone because everything she owned had burned down to the ground.

Another witness named Yevhen Zosin described his terrifying experience during the sudden midnight bombardment. The seventy-four-year-old resident immediately rushed to grab his dog when he heard the first explosion. A second blast occurred instantly and threw them backward through the air with immense force. The powerful shock wave wrecked his apartment but miraculously both he and his dog survived.

Cultural Heritage Under Fire

The conflict also took a heavy toll on the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine. The National Art Museum suffered significant structural damage from the nearby hypersonic blast waves this week. This historic institution houses one of the most important art collections in the entire country. The culture ministry shared distressing images showing heavily damaged ceilings and completely shattered windows across rooms. Debris and broken glass were left scattered across the grand exhibition floors and main staircases.

Museum staff and emergency services quickly began inspecting the building to assess the architectural damage. Fortunately, reports from local journalists indicated that the valuable art collection itself remained entirely unharmed. Tetyana Berezhna, the minister of culture, strongly condemned the strike on her official Instagram account. She stated that Russia is systematically attacking civilian infrastructure and important cultural institutions across Ukraine. Berezhna argued that each strike represents an attempt to intimidate citizens and destroy national identity.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry building was also damaged for the first time since world war two. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted the historic building possesses a very unique and irreplaceable architectural heritage. He explained that the structure suffered light damage as a result of nearby hypersonic missile explosions. Sybiha stated that the Russian strikes had deliberately targeted a deeply historic area of the capital. He remarked that this provides further proof they are dealing with hordes of brutal barbarians.

Escallation Sparks Global Outrage

The government headquarters of Ukraine also suffered damage, with many windows being blown completely out. Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that thankfully no staff members were injured during the incident. This intense barrage followed recent threats from Vladimir Putin to seek revenge against Ukrainian forces. Putin had previously accused Ukraine of launching a deadly drone strike on a student dormitory. That alleged attack occurred in Starobilsk, a Russian-controlled region located within eastern Ukraine this month.

Ukraine strongly denied those accusations and asserted they had targeted an elite military command unit instead. Russian officials claimed the eastern strike killed twenty-one people and wounded forty-two others quite severely. Following that incident, Putin ordered his top military commanders to prepare strong options for retaliation. The resulting escalation prompted an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council this weekend. Ukraine’s ambassador firmly rejected the war crimes accusations, calling them a pure Russian propaganda show.

Global leaders moved quickly to condemn the use of the Oreshnik hypersonic missile in Kyiv. French President Emmanuel Macron stated the attack signaled the ultimate dead end of Russia’s aggressive war. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly called the deployment of the advanced weapon a reckless escalation. The European Union foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, offered a very sharp rebuke of Moscow. She stated that Russia had clearly hit a dead end on the actual battlefield. Kallas accused the Kremlin of terrorizing innocent civilians through deliberate strikes on busy city centres.

Nuclear Brinkmanship and Western Response

Kallas further described the Oreshnik missile deployment as a political scare tactic by the Kremlin. She viewed the move as a dangerous form of reckless nuclear brinkmanship by Vladimir Putin. The foreign chief announced that European ministers would soon discuss how to increase international pressure. Other European leaders quickly stepped forward to offer their unwavering support to the Ukrainian government. Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger expressed that she was deeply appalled by the massive capital attack. She wrote that these strikes reinforce what is currently at stake for global security.

The Austrian official emphasized that Ukraine’s freedom and shared European values must be protected at costs. In the United Kingdom, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper offered a similar assessment of the situation. She stated that Moscow’s escalating assault on Ukrainian civilians clearly betrays its fundamental strategic weakness. Meanwhile, it emerged that Ukraine had received some advance warning about the incoming hypersonic missile strike. President Zelenskyy revealed that Western partners warned him about the Oreshnik deployment hours before it happened.

Russia first used the Oreshnik missile against the city of Dnipro in late November 2024. The military deployed the advanced weapon a second time this January in the western Lviv region. Vladimir Putin has frequently boasted that the hypersonic missile is completely impossible for enemies to intercept. He claims it travels at ten times the speed of sound with incredible destructive power. Although Western defense analysts remain skeptical of these claims, Ukraine currently lacks adequate defense systems. The nation remains vulnerable to these specific hypersonic weapons without additional advanced military assistance from allies.
