At least 11 people were killed in Israeli air strikes targeting several areas of Gaza City on Thursday, according to Palestinian medics and local health officials.
Medical teams said the attacks struck residential neighbourhoods and crowded civilian areas, with multiple casualties reported among women and children. Several others were injured as rescue workers searched through damaged buildings for survivors.
Witnesses reported heavy explosions across parts of Gaza City overnight, with smoke rising from densely populated districts following successive air raids. Ambulances and emergency crews rushed victims to nearby hospitals already struggling under severe shortages of medicine, fuel and medical supplies.
The Israeli military said its operations were targeting Hamas infrastructure and militants involved in attacks against Israel. It claimed that measures were taken to minimise civilian harm, though no immediate evidence regarding the specific strikes was provided.
Palestinian officials accused Israel of intensifying attacks on civilian areas amid worsening humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip. Local authorities said many families remain trapped under rubble due to limited rescue equipment and continuous bombardment.
The latest strikes come as international pressure grows for a broader ceasefire agreement in the region following renewed fighting involving Israel, Hezbollah and Iran-backed groups across the Middle East.
The United Nations and humanitarian organisations have repeatedly warned about the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where large sections of infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and residential buildings, have been severely damaged during months of conflict.
According to Gaza health authorities, thousands of Palestinians have been killed or injured since the war escalated, while hundreds of thousands remain displaced across the territory.
Meanwhile, Israeli officials continue to defend military operations as necessary to dismantle Hamas capabilities following repeated rocket attacks and security threats against Israeli communities.
Diplomatic efforts led by the United States, Qatar and Egypt to secure a lasting ceasefire have so far failed to produce a comprehensive agreement.
