A severe diplomatic crisis has erupted after an Israeli minister published video footage of international activists being abused by security forces. The far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, shared the controversial recording across his social media platforms with a mocking welcome message. The detainees had been captured by Israeli forces while attempting to sail towards Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. According to legal representatives, three activists required hospital treatment due to the violence used against them during detention. Dozens of other individuals suffer from suspected broken ribs, which has caused them severe breathing difficulties.
Human rights organisations have reported systemic violations of due process alongside widespread physical and psychological abuse. The legal group Adalah stated that it received a large number of complaints regarding extreme violence. The published footage displays rows of men and women kneeling on the ground with bound hands. Ben-Gvir appeared in the video waving an Israeli flag while taunting the bound international detainees. The shocking images drew a rapid and furious response from governments whose citizens were onboard the vessels. Strong condemnation arrived quickly from the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Spain, and several other global powers.
Even the closest allies of the nation expressed profound disgust at the behaviour of the minister. The United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, described the actions of Ben-Gvir as entirely despicable. Huckabee added that the national security minister had effectively betrayed the dignity of his own nation. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni released a lengthy statement online calling the images completely unacceptable. Meloni demanded the immediate release of all Italian citizens involved alongside an official state apology. She stated that the treatment violated human dignity and displayed total contempt toward the Italian government.
The Spanish foreign minister labelled the treatment of the humanitarian demonstrators as monstrous, disgraceful, and inhumane. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper expressed that she was truly appalled by the online video clip. Cooper stated that the footage violates the most basic standards of respect and human dignity. The Foreign Office remains in direct contact with families of British citizens held by Israel. European Council President Antonio Costa also voiced his deep concern regarding the treatment of the members. Costa called for the immediate release of everyone who was captured during the naval operation.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong joined the international condemnation by calling the images shocking and unacceptable. Wong explicitly condemned the actions of Ben-Gvir, an official whom Australia has previously placed under sanctions. She criticised the degrading actions of the authorities towards the foreign nationals who were detained. New Zealand has also taken formal diplomatic action by summoning the Israeli ambassador to register concerns. Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters ordered the ministry to directly convey the grave worries of New Zealand. Peters noted that his country had already placed a travel ban on Ben-Gvir last year.
The previous travel ban was implemented because the minister deliberately undermined peace and the two-state solution. Peters stated that this latest conduct justifies the firm position taken by New Zealand against him. Israel currently holds three New Zealand citizens who were intercepted while participating in the aid mission. The Global Sumud Flotilla confirmed the identities of the three detained New Zealand nationals this week. Peters stated he expects Israel to adhere strictly to its international obligations regarding the detainees. Organisers reported that more than four hundred activists from forty countries took part in the mission.
The extensive aid flotilla consisted of fifty vessels that originally set sail from a port in Turkey. The mission represents the latest high-profile attempt by global activists to break the blockade of Gaza. The naval interception occurs seven months after a ceasefire came into force within the devastated territory. Despite the ceasefire, widespread hunger persists and most Palestinians live in overcrowded tents or temporary shelters. Clean water and adequate sanitation remain scarce, while military strikes continue to occur on a daily basis. Israeli naval forces intercepted the aid fleet in international waters before towing them to port.
The South Korean president, Lee Jae Myung, denounced the actions as being completely out of line. Lee questioned the legal basis for arresting international citizens within international waters outside territorial limits. Human rights lawyers met hundreds of the activists at Ashdod port under severe access restrictions. These heavy restrictions meant that legal teams were unable to see every single detained person. Activists told their lawyers that they faced extreme violence when their boats were first intercepted. They reported being assaulted on military vessels and during their subsequent transfer to the port.
The reported violence included the deployment of rubber bullets and tasers against the unarmed aid volunteers. Authorities allegedly forced the activists into painful stress positions and made them kneel for prolonged periods. Detainees were also forced to bend double while being moved around the port by guards. Beyond physical abuse, rights groups reported that the detainees faced severe degradation and sexual harassment. Several Muslim women reported that their traditional hijabs were forcibly ripped off during the ordeal. The military referred comments to the prison service and foreign ministry, which did not respond.
The global outrage prompted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly condemn his minister within hours. Netanyahu stated that the actions of Ben-Gvir did not align with national values and norms. The prime minister added that he ordered the swift deportation of the international group. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar launched a much more scathing personal attack on the controversial security minister. Saar accused Ben-Gvir of knowingly causing immense harm to the state through a disgraceful public display. The foreign minister explicitly stated on social media that Ben-Gvir does not represent the nation.
Ben-Gvir appeared to relish the internal political conflict and replied that the country had stopped being weak. Human rights groups have previously documented systemic torture of Palestinian prisoners during the recent war. Sari Bashi, a director at the Public Committee Against Torture, said the video reflects an ongoing culture. Bashi stated that the footage indicates how badly the rights of detainees have suffered under current leadership. She explained that prison guards seeing leadership praise mistreatment will feel empowered to abuse other prisoners. The minister is effectively signaling that cruel behaviour is encouraged at the highest political level.
Adalah noted that Israel has faced zero accountability for similar patterns of abuse in past missions. The group called on the international community to take urgent action to protect the current detainees. The video emerged just after finance minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the eviction of a Palestinian village. Smotrich ordered the removal of residents from Khan al-Ahmar in response to international court actions. The village houses over seven hundred people and sits in a highly sensitive area of the West Bank. Reports indicate the International Criminal Court prosecutor has requested arrest warrants for several top officials.
