A group of House Republicans has broken ranks with US President Donald Trump by supporting a new military and financial aid package for Ukraine, exposing growing divisions within the Republican Party over America’s role in the ongoing war.
The aid legislation, approved in the House on Thursday with bipartisan backing, includes billions of dollars in military assistance, humanitarian support and security funding aimed at helping Ukraine resist continued Russian attacks.
Several Republican lawmakers voted alongside Democrats despite Trump publicly urging party members to oppose additional aid, arguing that the United States should prioritise domestic issues over foreign conflicts.
The vote marks another significant challenge to Trump’s influence within Congress, particularly among national security-focused Republicans who continue to support strong US involvement in European defence matters.
Supporters of the package said continued assistance to Ukraine remains essential for regional stability and for countering Russian military expansion. They warned that reducing support could weaken NATO alliances and embolden Moscow.
Critics aligned with Trump argued that the aid package would place additional financial strain on American taxpayers while failing to produce a clear strategy for ending the war.
House Republican leaders faced intense internal negotiations ahead of the vote, reflecting broader ideological divisions between traditional conservative foreign policy supporters and Trump-aligned lawmakers advocating a more isolationist approach.
Democratic leaders welcomed the bipartisan approval, calling it a demonstration of continued American commitment to Ukraine despite political disagreements in Washington.
The latest package reportedly includes advanced defence systems, ammunition supplies, intelligence support and funding for rebuilding damaged infrastructure in Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked lawmakers following the vote, describing the decision as critical for Ukraine’s defence against ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks.
The Kremlin condemned the approval of additional US aid, accusing Washington of prolonging the conflict and increasing geopolitical tensions.
Political analysts say the vote highlights emerging fractures within the Republican Party ahead of the upcoming election cycle, where foreign policy and defence spending are expected to become major campaign issues.
