A woman has been formally charged with multiple offences following an incident at a London hotel used to house migrants, which escalated after one of the residents allegedly entered her flat without permission. The incident has drawn heightened attention amid ongoing tensions and protests surrounding the facility.
The altercation unfolded on Wednesday evening at the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf, central London. According to the Metropolitan Police, 22-year-old Channay Augustus, who occupies the flat that was entered, is facing charges including possession of an offensive weapon, affray, assault on an emergency worker, common assault, and possession of cannabis. Police have stated that the affray and common assault charges are linked to a confrontation that took place at the hotel, where the alleged victim was a security guard employed at the premises.
The situation reportedly began earlier in the day when a man, described as being in his early 20s and a resident of the hotel at the time, allegedly walked into Augustus’s flat. Video footage circulating on social media shows a man entering a residence after being told to “go back to the hotel.” Members of the public subsequently detained him before he was taken into custody. It is understood that while the man had been staying at the Britannia Hotel, he no longer resides there.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the man was arrested in the Hackney area in the early hours of Thursday morning on suspicion of common assault. He remains in police custody pending further investigation. The incident is the latest to emerge from a property that has seen repeated demonstrations in recent weeks over its use as migrant accommodation.
Court proceedings for Augustus are set to begin at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Friday. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the two incidents — the alleged trespass into her flat and the subsequent altercation at the hotel — will be formally linked in court, but both remain under active investigation.
