Israel has launched retaliatory airstrikes on targets inside Iran after Tehran fired missiles toward northern Israel in a major escalation threatening to destabilise the wider Middle East.
The Israeli military said its air force struck military targets in western and central Iran following what officials described as direct Iranian missile attacks on Israeli territory. Explosions were reported in several Iranian cities, including Tehran, Isfahan and Tabriz.
Iranian missiles triggered air raid sirens across northern Israel, with Israeli defence systems intercepting many of the incoming projectiles, according to military officials.
The latest confrontation marks one of the most serious direct exchanges between Israel and Iran since a fragile ceasefire was announced earlier this year. Analysts warned that continued retaliation could push the region closer to a wider conflict involving multiple armed groups and regional powers.
The escalation followed Israeli strikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs targeting Hezbollah-linked positions, which Tehran strongly condemned. Iranian officials described the missile barrage as retaliation for attacks carried out against allies in Lebanon.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly faced pressure from international leaders, including US President Donald Trump, to avoid further escalation and preserve ongoing diplomatic efforts linked to regional ceasefire negotiations.
Iran warned that additional Israeli military operations could trigger broader retaliation, while regional governments increased security preparedness amid fears of wider instability.
Military analysts said the strikes demonstrated both countries’ willingness to engage directly despite repeated international calls for restraint.
The United States confirmed it was not directly involved in Israel’s latest military operation, though Washington continues monitoring developments closely.
The renewed violence has intensified concerns over regional security, global energy markets and the possibility of prolonged military confrontation across the Middle East.
Diplomatic efforts to restore calm are continuing as international organisations and foreign governments urge immediate de-escalation.
