UK Credit Card Borrowing Hits Highest Annual Rise

Credit card borrowing in the UK rose sharply in November, marking the highest annual increase in almost two years. The Bank of England reported that households borrowed £2.1bn in consumer credit, including £1bn through credit cards, reflecting growing financial pressure and festive spending. Analysts noted that credit card borrowing growth jumped from 10.9% in October to 12.1% in November, the fastest pace since January 2024. Rising consumer debt highlights ongoing challenges for British households as inflation remains above target and festive costs surged across essential items.

Experts suggest the surge in credit card borrowing mirrors household struggles to manage living expenses without additional credit. Simon Trevethick, from StepChange, commented that many families are increasingly reliant on credit cards to cover both everyday costs and seasonal spending. Polling data from StepChange showed that nearly 14 million UK residents feared they could not afford Christmas without turning to borrowing.

Although inflation has moderated to 3.2% annually, it remains higher than the Bank of England’s 2% target, keeping households under financial pressure. Food prices, in particular, contributed to higher costs during the festive period. British Retail Consortium data indicated that annual shop price inflation increased to 0.7% in December from 0.6% in November, driven primarily by a 3.3% rise in food prices, while non-food items dropped by 0.6% due to retailer discounting.

Helen Dickinson, BRC chief executive, noted that shoppers still benefited from seasonal promotions on gifts, toys, and festive essentials. These discounts provided some relief for households navigating higher living costs while relying more on credit cards. Despite widespread value, the overall trend points to growing dependence on borrowing for ordinary expenses, reinforcing the significance of rising credit card use.

Late 2025 had seen UK consumers exercise caution amid speculation over tax changes, reflected in retail sales falling by 0.1% in November. However, the November surge in credit card borrowing suggests that households remained willing to use credit to finance spending, even as savings also increased. UK bank deposits grew by £8.1bn in November, indicating that while borrowing rose, households continued to prioritise financial security.

Mortgage approvals mirrored the cautious approach in the property market, with net approvals for house purchases falling to 64,500 in November. Alex Kerr, UK economist at Capital Economics, observed that the increase in deposits reflected careful household planning ahead of the autumn budget, yet borrowing levels still rose, highlighting selective spending confidence. He emphasised that the November credit card borrowing spike indicates consumer behaviour remained resilient despite uncertainty over tax changes.

The broader economic picture shows a mixed scenario for UK households. Rising credit card borrowing signals growing reliance on debt, while bank deposits and careful mortgage activity reflect cautious optimism. Analysts warn that ongoing inflation pressures combined with festive expenditures may continue to drive credit card use into early 2026. Consumers face balancing debt management with day-to-day expenses, making monitoring borrowing patterns increasingly critical for economic planning and financial health.

Overall, the November statistics underline that UK households are turning to credit cards more rapidly than at any time since January 2024, reflecting both festive pressures and structural cost-of-living challenges. Policymakers and financial advisers continue to stress the importance of responsible borrowing as credit card debt reaches levels unseen in nearly two years. The dynamics of credit card borrowing in the UK will remain a crucial measure of household resilience and spending behaviour throughout 2026.
