All 24 Indian crew members have been safely rescued after a tanker caught fire off the coast of Oman following a suspected strike, in an incident that has intensified concerns over rising tensions in key global shipping lanes.
The vessel, identified as a Palau-flagged tanker operating in waters near Oman, reportedly suffered a sudden blaze while at sea, prompting an urgent distress response and coordinated rescue operations involving regional maritime authorities.
Emergency teams from Oman, supported by international coordination centres, evacuated the entire crew without fatalities, according to shipping and government officials.
Authorities said the fire broke out after what is believed to have been an external impact, with early reports suggesting the possibility of a missile or drone-related incident, though this has not been independently confirmed.
Maritime rescue agencies rapidly deployed assets, including helicopters and nearby vessels, to ensure the safe evacuation of all 24 Indian nationals on board.
The Indian Coast Guard confirmed that it was alerted shortly after the incident and worked with Oman’s Maritime Search and Rescue Centre to coordinate response efforts.
Officials said the tanker was later stabilised but remained under observation as investigators assessed the cause of the fire and potential environmental risks.
Shipping analysts noted that the incident adds to a growing pattern of disruptions affecting commercial vessels in strategically sensitive waters near the Strait of Hormuz.
Energy and maritime security experts warned that repeated attacks or accidents in the region could have wider implications for global trade routes and insurance costs.
The Indian government has not reported any injuries among the crew, and diplomatic channels are understood to be engaged with regional authorities to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Investigations are ongoing, with authorities expected to release further details once the cause of the fire is confirmed.
