A chip shop owner says a large sinkhole that appeared outside the business has “cut trade in half”, as disruption caused by road closures and safety barriers continues affecting customers and nearby businesses.
The sinkhole emerged following concerns over underground ground stability and has led local authorities to restrict access to parts of the surrounding street while engineers investigate the damage.
Business owners in the area say reduced foot traffic and transport disruption have significantly affected daily sales, particularly during busy evening periods.
The chip shop owner described the situation as financially damaging, explaining that many regular customers are avoiding the area due to traffic diversions and limited pedestrian access.
Local residents also reported frustration over delays and uncertainty regarding repair timelines.
Engineers are currently assessing the cause of the sinkhole, with early indications suggesting possible issues involving underground drainage systems or ageing infrastructure.
Infrastructure specialists note that sinkholes can develop when water erosion weakens soil beneath roads and pavements over extended periods.
Council officials said public safety remains the priority and confirmed that repair work will continue until the area is considered stable.
Small business groups warned that prolonged closures can place serious pressure on independent shops already facing rising operating costs and economic uncertainty.
Transport disruptions linked to road repairs have also affected deliveries and parking availability for nearby businesses.
Residents and traders are calling for faster communication from local authorities regarding construction schedules and reopening plans.
Experts say ageing underground infrastructure and increasingly severe weather conditions have contributed to a rise in road collapses and maintenance problems in some areas.
Despite the difficulties, business owners say they remain hopeful that repairs will restore normal customer activity once access restrictions are removed.
