Massive crowds filled the streets of Madrid as thousands gathered to attend an open-air Mass led by the Pope during a major religious event in the Spanish capital.

Pilgrims, worshippers and tourists travelled from across Spain and other countries to witness the ceremony, which transformed central areas of Madrid into a large public gathering marked by prayer, music and religious celebration.

The Vatican described the event as a message of peace, unity and faith during a period of global uncertainty and political tension.

Security was significantly increased throughout the city as authorities managed large crowds near the outdoor venue and surrounding transport routes.

Church leaders said the Mass focused on themes including compassion, social solidarity and support for vulnerable communities.

Many attendees waved flags, held religious symbols and gathered for hours before the Pope’s arrival, creating an atmosphere of celebration across the city centre.

Spanish officials welcomed the event as both a religious and cultural occasion carrying international importance for the predominantly Catholic country.

The Pope also addressed concerns surrounding conflict, poverty and migration during remarks delivered to worshippers during the ceremony.

Religious analysts noted that large-scale public gatherings involving the Pope continue attracting strong global attention despite declining church attendance in parts of Europe.

The event provided a major boost for tourism and local businesses, with hotels, restaurants and transport services experiencing heavy demand during the visit.

Madrid authorities coordinated closely with emergency services and security personnel to manage crowd safety throughout the day.

The open-air Mass is expected to remain one of the largest religious gatherings held in Spain this year.

Observers said the turnout demonstrated the continuing influence of the Catholic Church in major public and international events despite broader social changes across Europe.
