Plans for a new White House ballroom championed by US President Donald Trump have reportedly doubled in both scale and projected cost over the past year, raising fresh debate over government spending and presidential legacy projects.
According to officials familiar with the proposal, the planned ballroom expansion has evolved from an initially modest renovation into a far larger construction project designed to host major state functions, diplomatic receptions and large ceremonial gatherings.
Early estimates placed the project’s cost at several hundred million dollars, but revised projections now suggest the total expense could exceed twice the original figure due to expanded architectural plans, enhanced security requirements and rising construction costs.
Supporters of the proposal argue that the White House lacks sufficient large-scale event space compared with other world capitals and presidential residences. Trump has long advocated for a grand ballroom, claiming it would reduce reliance on temporary event structures and modernise facilities for international diplomacy.
Critics, however, say the growing price tag reflects unnecessary extravagance at a time of wider economic pressures and federal budget concerns. Opposition lawmakers and ethics groups have questioned whether taxpayer funds should be directed toward what some describe as a prestige-driven construction project.
Sources close to the administration say the redesigned ballroom would include significantly larger guest capacity, advanced media facilities, upgraded security infrastructure and expanded hospitality areas intended for high-profile international events.
Architectural proposals reportedly include designs intended to complement the historic appearance of the White House while incorporating modern engineering and security technology.
The project has also triggered debate among preservationists concerned about maintaining the architectural integrity and historical symbolism of the White House complex.
Administration officials insist the ballroom would become a long-term national asset capable of hosting state dinners, diplomatic conferences and official ceremonies more efficiently.
Trump has repeatedly promoted large-scale construction and branding projects throughout his political and business career, often presenting them as symbols of national prestige and economic confidence.
No final construction timetable has yet been announced, though reports suggest planning discussions and budget negotiations are continuing behind closed doors.
