Two years ago, the Democratic party had one singular mission: stopping Donald Trump’s return. That goal was the only priority, but they ultimately failed through some breathtaking political malpractice. Today, the party faces two jobs: winning the House and securing the Senate seat. These victories are essential to turn Donald Trump into a lame duck president soon. Once again, the party is in grave danger of failing to achieve these goals.
On Wednesday, the Democratic candidate Graham Platner announced he was withdrawing from the race. A woman who previously dated him alleged he drunkenly forced her into sexual acts. She stated she told him to stop, yet he allegedly refused to listen then. Platner vehemently denies the serious allegations recently reported by the news outlet Politico. This situation is a disaster because every seat matters in our narrow Senate chambers. Republicans currently hold a narrow majority, making every single contest feel incredibly high stakes. The electoral map is not favourable to Democrats, but they hoped to pull off wins. Riding the wave of anti-Trump sentiment, they envisioned acting as a vital check today.
Who is to blame for this messy, unfolding political debacle? The list of culpable individuals is quite long and continues to grow daily. First, there is Platner himself, who recklessly pressed ahead despite many hidden skeletons. At his victory party last month, he watched his mother burnish his image. With the benefit of hindsight, it appears she was cynically used as props. In an eleven-minute video message on Wednesday, Platner played the martyr for voters. He wallowed in self-pity while railing against the corporate media and political establishment. He refused to take any personal responsibility for his own very troubling, documented actions.
Adam Smith, a congressman from Washington, spoke candidly to the MS Now network. He stated that Platner is a bad guy and not a good person. Smith noted that he is using anti-establishment feelings to act as a demagogue. How Platner got this far in the race is its own sorry story. He was recruited by progressive activists Daniel Moraff and Leanne Fan recently. They reportedly paid a vetting firm for a quick, cheap, and dirty background check. That process ignored the need for a comprehensive review of his personal life. Even that limited check uncovered some disturbing social media posts from his past.
However, Moraff told the Wall Street Journal that people want authentic, real candidates. Platner would be hit by other controversies, including questions over a questionable tattoo. This mark was widely recognized as a Nazi symbol by many observers online. Stories soon emerged that he had exchanged sexually explicit messages while being married. Another report described Platner’s abusive and unsettling behavior towards women across Maine. Yet, many Democrats continued to rally around him despite these very clear warnings. Part of this was surely wishful thinking about class and gender politics today. Democrats have long had an image problem as the party of coastal elites.
Kamala Harris’s 2024 election defeat by Trump also showed they were losing men. Platner, a bearded, rugged combat veteran and oyster farmer, seemed like an antidote. He claimed to be a working-class guy living a very simple, honest life. His aesthetics seemed to give Democrats the blue-collar credibility they desperately craved. Megan McArdle observed that Trump was a poor person’s idea of a rich person. She noted that Democrats, trying to tap that same energy, selected a fraud. They chose a rich person’s idea of a poor person to run instead.
Just like Trump, who received millions from his father, the rationale was flawed. Platner is the son of a wealthy lawyer and an upscale restaurant owner. He attended a private high school where he played on the wrestling team. He even played the upper-class bachelor in a production of My Fair Lady. Only a small fraction of his income comes from his oyster farming venture. But Democrats became so desperate to avoid accusations of elite privilege and deep emasculation. Platner’s misdeeds were explained away as evidence that he was an authentic man.
In an echo of the Clinton affair, some liberal women defended him. They found themselves on the wrong side of history after the news broke. There were other deep Democratic divisions regarding his policy positions and rhetoric. Platner was a fatally flawed messenger, but his message resonated with many. He spoke of smashing the corruption of wealthy elites and universal health insurance. He promised to restore the constitutional right to abortion and end the war. In today’s toxic climate, that meant his critics were often dismissed quickly. Media revelations were treated with suspicion regarding the motives of those reporting.
Only with Monday’s Politico report did major party leaders abandon his ship. Social media filled with Democratic moderates smugly taking their own victory laps. They conveniently forgot their own past blind spots regarding other party leaders. But the party establishment is also culpable for this mess in Maine. Chuck Schumer cleared the field for Janet Mills to run for office. She had little appetite for the seat and ran a lackluster campaign. She announced her candidacy late and suspended her efforts back in April.
Nature abhors a vacuum, especially when the center is so very mushy. When the leadership feels unimaginative, voters rush to the bracing, loud outsiders. As recent primary results show, people are frustrated with the party’s leadership. A divided opposition party is the last thing that US democracy needs now. Authoritarians thrive when they are afforded space by competitors who are constantly bickering. The Lincoln Project pleaded for Democrats to stop the stupid ideological fights. They suggested finding someone articulate who does not have a Nazi tattoo.
When it comes to damage limitation, Democrats must coalesce around accountability. Yes, they waited too long, but they did eject the candidate eventually. That contrasts with the impunity of Republicans, who ignore the misdemeanors of others. There is still some hope for Democrats in Maine to find replacements. The state Democratic party held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to decide. More than a hundred committee members signed off on a nominating convention. Whoever they choose will need to walk a very thin, difficult tightrope. They must harness progressive energy while winning back the alienated moderate voters. Or given the time constraints, they will need to run very fast.
The Trump era is the story of Republican capitulation and Democratic ineptitude. In 2016 and 2024, the party showed it could not win effectively. They could not beat a fake populist with a history of blatant lies. From Africa to Iran, the entire world is paying the heavy price. The meltdown in Maine is a warning that help is not coming.
