Iran has formally accused the United States of violating a fragile peace agreement between the two nations. This diplomatic fallout follows intense American military strikes conducted around the strategic Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. Furthermore, the United States has revoked a temporary sanctions waiver that previously allowed Tehran to export its oil. The American military reported that it successfully engaged more than eighty targets during the early hours of Wednesday morning. These operations served as a direct response to Iranian attacks on three commercial vessels that were transiting through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. United States Central Command characterized the Iranian aggression as both unwarranted and dangerous, describing it as a clear violation of the existing ceasefire.
The three vessels targeted included a Qatari LNG tanker, all of which were struck within mere hours of each other inside the vital maritime corridor. In an immediate and defiant response, Iran launched retaliatory strikes against various United States military installations located within Bahrain and Kuwait. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps subsequently claimed that they had successfully targeted eighty-five distinct facilities across the region. Air raid sirens echoed throughout both nations as the Kuwaiti military confirmed that their air defences were actively confronting multiple incoming hostile missile and drone attacks. While official reports remain ongoing, there has been no immediate confirmation regarding significant infrastructure damage or casualties resulting from these specific Iranian strikes.
Wednesday’s military engagements represent the most recent collapse in a series of efforts to maintain the ceasefire established earlier in April. This truce was intended to stabilize the region following the signing of a memorandum of understanding last month that initiated sixty days of critical negotiations. These high-stakes talks were designed to address the complex issue of Iran’s nuclear program while simultaneously bringing a permanent end to these escalating hostilities. United States officials, speaking to various media outlets on Wednesday, clarified that their strikes were aimed specifically at Iranian weapon launch sites, air defence systems, and regional coastal surveillance equipment. Simultaneously, Iranian state media reported a series of significant explosions occurring on Qeshm Island, as well as in the coastal cities of Sirik and Bandar Abbas.
Reports from Washington indicate that President Donald Trump personally authorized these strikes while he was attending the ongoing NATO summit held in Turkey. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte offered his full support for the American military action during a press conference on Wednesday morning, stating that a forceful reaction was essential given the Iranian violations. The Iranian foreign ministry countered these claims by accusing the United States of repeatedly breaching the signed memorandum of understanding and warned that Tehran would take decisive measures. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the chief negotiator for Tehran, cited the recent American interference in the Strait of Hormuz, ongoing regional tensions, and these latest strikes on southern Iran as evidence of bad faith.
Ghalibaf also specifically highlighted the United States Treasury’s decision to revoke the temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil sales as a major provocation. The United States had lifted these specific sanctions on Iranian oil exports just last month following the initial signing of the memorandum of understanding. However, the American administration moved to re-impose these restrictive measures immediately on Tuesday following the reported attacks on the commercial vessels. This particular waiver on oil exports had proven to be deeply controversial among many critics of the current administration’s approach, who argued that it surrendered a crucial tool of economic leverage before nuclear negotiations had even properly commenced.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre confirmed that the Qatari tanker Al Rekayyat was among the vessels hit on Tuesday as it attempted to transit south toward the Gulf of Oman. Qatar, which has played an active role as a mediator in the delicate talks between Washington and Tehran, expressed its deep frustration regarding the incident. A foreign ministry spokesperson for Qatar called the attack a serious and explicit violation of international law, emphasizing that they would hold Iran fully responsible for the act of aggression. All three tankers were reportedly struck in close proximity to the coast of Oman, a nation that has recently proposed an alternative shipping corridor. Iran has vehemently opposed this new proposal, as it intends to impose fees on international vessels utilizing the contested waterway for their own commercial benefit.
Tehran argues that Washington’s active efforts to open these new shipping routes through the strait constitute a fundamental breach of the memorandum of understanding signed by both parties. Iran maintains that the legal text of the memorandum was specifically worded to grant them, in close consultation with Oman, the authority to manage the reopening of the waterway for international commercial traffic. Many geopolitical experts have noted that the intentionally vague language used in the memorandum has left both sides interpreting the agreement in conflicting and often contradictory ways. These recurring misunderstandings continue to serve as a dangerous threat to the long-term stability of the ceasefire. Wednesday’s strikes occurred during the period of mourning for Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed earlier this year. Tuesday saw massive crowds gathering in the holy city of Qom to mourn his passing, with participants carrying banners that explicitly called for aggressive action against the United States leadership.
