A proposed luxury resort project in Albania reportedly backed by investors linked to Jared Kushner has triggered protests and political controversy over environmental concerns and land development.
Demonstrators gathered in several areas to oppose the large-scale coastal resort plan, arguing that the project could damage protected natural landscapes, threaten local communities and increase pressure on Albania’s fragile environment.
The proposed development is expected to include luxury accommodation, tourism facilities and high-end infrastructure aimed at attracting international visitors and foreign investment.
Supporters of the project claim it could generate jobs, strengthen Albania’s tourism industry and boost economic growth in coastal regions increasingly targeted for international development.
Critics, however, accuse authorities of prioritising wealthy foreign investors over environmental protection and public interest.
Environmental campaigners warned that construction near sensitive coastal ecosystems could harm biodiversity, marine habitats and traditional fishing communities.
Opposition politicians also questioned the transparency of the approval process and called for greater public consultation before major development decisions are finalised.
Government officials defended the project, stating that investment agreements would comply with environmental regulations and contribute to long-term economic expansion.
Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, has been linked to international business ventures and investment initiatives through private firms involved in real estate and infrastructure projects.
Analysts say the controversy reflects broader tensions across parts of the Balkans, where governments are seeking foreign investment while facing growing public concern over environmental sustainability and land use.
Tourism remains one of Albania’s fastest-growing economic sectors, with coastal regions attracting increasing attention from international developers and luxury hospitality brands.
Protest organisers vowed to continue demonstrations and legal challenges if authorities move forward with final approval of the resort project.
The dispute has intensified national debate over balancing economic development, environmental conservation and foreign investment influence in Albania’s future planning decisions.
