The kingdom of Thailand is entering a profound period of national mourning following an official announcement from the royal palace. Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol, the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, has passed away at the age of 47. Her tragic death comes after she spent nearly four years in a deeply prolonged medical coma. The news has sent shockwaves across the southeast Asian nation and caught global media attention. Citizens had held onto hope for her recovery since her sudden hospitalisation in late 2022. Her passing leaves a massive void within the prominent royal family and the nation.

The respected princess, warmly known to the Thai public as Princess Bha, collapsed unexpectedly in December 2022. She became gravely ill while training her beloved dogs for a domestic military championship event. Medical teams immediately rushed her to a premier hospital facility located in the capital city. Doctors diagnosed her with severe heart problems that rapidly compromised her vital bodily functions. For years, the palace remained highly guarded regarding specific details of her ongoing medical treatment. Regular updates were exceptionally rare, which fueled intense public concern and widespread quiet speculation.

The medical situation deteriorated significantly during the spring months of this current year of 2026. In early May, the palace broke its long silence with a troubling medical bulletin. Physicians revealed that her overall condition had worsened due to several severe organ infections. Her medical team struggled intensely but failed to stabilise her highly irregular heart rate. These complications followed an earlier discovery made by her doctors in April of this year. They diagnosed a severe stomach infection that quickly caused widespread inflammation in her intestines. This internal inflammation caused her blood pressure to drop to dangerously low levels.

Her heart began beating erratically, which put immense strain on her already fragile body. For months, her critical kidney function and breathing required continuous support from advanced medical equipment. The palace statements made it clear that life support systems were keeping her alive. Despite receiving the best possible medical care, her body eventually succumbed to these illnesses. The loss has devastated her immediate family, including her father, the current reigning monarch. The Thai public is now remembering her incredible life of service and dedication.

Born in late 1978, the princess possessed an impressively rich lineage and a bright future. Her parents were the then-Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn and his first wife, Princess Soamsawali. Her mother was also her father’s direct cousin, maintaining close ties within the aristocracy. From a very young age, Princess Bajrakitiyabha demonstrated an extraordinary intellect and academic drive. She pursued higher education with great passion, earning multiple prestigious degrees over her lifetime. Her academic journey culminated in a doctorate in law from Cornell University in America.

She utilized her extensive legal education to serve her country in several major roles. The princess worked diligently within the Thai attorney general’s office for many successful years. She also assumed a prominent commanding role within the elite royal security command unit. On the global stage, she served with distinction as Thailand’s official ambassador to Austria. Her diplomatic skills earned her immense respect from international leaders and foreign dignitaries alike. Furthermore, she became a highly active goodwill ambassador for the United Nations office.

Her specific work with the UN focused heavily on combating global drugs and crime. She used her global platform to advocate passionately for the rights of female prisoners. The princess championed major legal reforms to improve conditions for incarcerated women in Thailand. This advocacy work earned her a reputation as a compassionate and modern reformer. Many citizens viewed her as an approachable royal who truly cared about vulnerable people. Her extensive professional achievements made her one of the most prominent royal figures.

Her untimely passing will inevitably raise profound and complex questions regarding the royal succession. This matter remains an extraordinarily sensitive issue within contemporary Thai society and political life. Public discussion surrounding the monarchy is strictly limited by a powerful lese majesty law. Anyone who criticises the royal family faces up to fifteen years in prison. A single legal charge can result in a lengthy and harsh mandatory sentence. Because of this law, citizens discuss the future of the crown with care.

Despite these strict conversational boundaries, international political analysts monitored her career very closely. Many experts considered Princess Bajrakitiyabha to be the most well-suited heir to the throne. She possessed the necessary intellect, legal training, and public popularity to lead the nation. However, the palace had never officially designated her as the next choice for monarch. Her passing creates an uncertain path forward for the future of the Thai crown. The king must now contemplate the succession without his most capable and trusted daughter.

King Maha Vajiralongkorn has experienced a highly complex personal life over several decades. The monarch has married four separate times and has fathered seven children in total. Despite this large family, Princess Bajrakitiyabha was a uniquely important figure among her siblings. She was one of only three children who officially held an active royal title. The other two titled children are Princess Sirivannavari and the young Prince Dipangkorn. Princess Sirivannavari is currently 38 years old and works primarily within fashion and sports.

Prince Dipangkorn is currently 20 years old and stands as the youngest titled son. Many royal observers had previously speculated about a potential political partnership between the siblings. Experts suggested that Princess Bajrakitiyabha might eventually act as a formal regent for Dipangkorn. The young prince is widely reported to experience significant and ongoing learning difficulties. Alternatively, some analysts believed that the princess might actually become the ruling queen herself. Such an event would be historic, as Thailand has never had a queen regnant.

The remaining four sons of the king live entirely outside of the kingdom. They have resided abroad in western nations since the middle of the 1990s. Their exile began when the king announced a bitter divorce from their mother, Sujarinee. The former actor was publicly and fiercely accused of committing adultery by the palace. Following the divorce, their young sister, Princess Sirivannavari, was brought back to Thailand. She was raised strictly as a full member of the prominent royal family.

The four estranged sons remained separated from their native homeland for several decades. However, the brothers unexpectedly travelled back to Thailand for the first time in 2023. They made several highly publicised visits to the country over the next two years. This temporary reunion ended abruptly when they faced renewed difficulties with the royal court. In 2025, the brothers claimed they were officially denied entry to Thailand again. This ongoing family division complicates any potential involvement they might have in royal affairs.

The king divorced Princess Bajrakitiyabha’s mother, Princess Soamsawali, back in the year 1991. Despite the old divorce, her mother successfully retained her prestigious royal title over time. She remains a highly respected and key member of the active Thai monarchy today. In contrast, Prince Dipangkorn’s mother, Srirasmi Suwadee, suffered a vastly different and harsher fate. She was stripped of her royal title after her family faced corruption charges. This leaves the royal family facing a deeply complex future as they mourn today.
