Some memories fade with time. Others remain remarkably vivid, attached to a particular smell, sound or unexpected moment. For one former student in Manchester, the memory that refuses to disappear is not of a university lecture, a first romance or a memorable night out, but of thousands of cockroaches living alongside her in a shared student house.

The infestation began as a warning that should probably have been taken seriously. When Anna Moore was preparing to move into a student property in Longsight, Manchester, she was told by one of the existing occupants that there was something she needed to know about the house.

“Do you know about the cockroaches?”

At the time, the warning did not fully register. The future tenants had already been shown the property by the landlord, who had explained that the current occupants were final-year students preparing for their examinations and should not be disturbed. The explanation seemed plausible, and the new tenants were young enough to accept it without asking too many questions.

It was only shortly before the end of the summer term that the reality became clear. A visit to the house to show a friend where she would soon be living revealed that the property was infested.

Yet, remarkably, the students moved in anyway.

Part of the problem was simple unfamiliarity. Without the internet and the instant access to information that exists today, it was difficult for a young person to appreciate exactly what living with a serious cockroach infestation meant. There were no quick online searches showing photographs, videos and descriptions of what to expect. The full scale of the problem would have required a trip to a library and some determined research.

What followed became an experience that would remain unforgettable decades later.

Cockroaches are among the most adaptable pests found around human homes. German cockroaches, in particular, can reproduce at extraordinary speed when conditions are favourable. A small surviving population hidden behind appliances or inside cracks can rapidly become a major infestation.

For the students, the insects seemed almost impossible to defeat. They appeared in kitchens, rooms and other parts of the house, moving with an unsettling combination of speed and persistence. Their glossy bodies, long antennae and ability to climb made them especially disturbing.

Even their smell became part of the memory.

The characteristic odour of a heavy cockroach infestation can be difficult to describe but surprisingly easy to recognise once experienced. Years later, encountering a similar smell in a shop or restaurant bathroom can instantly transport someone back to the Manchester house.

The students did have pest-control treatments. A specialist wearing protective equipment repeatedly visited the property and spread or sprayed chemicals in an effort to eliminate the insects. But the treatments did little to end the infestation permanently.

In one bizarre side effect, however, the chemicals appeared to solve another household problem. One housemate had suffered from a persistent verruca for years, and the treatment used against the cockroaches apparently helped eliminate it.

The strangest part of the experience was perhaps the way the students gradually adapted to living with the insects.

The first major encounter remained particularly vivid. Shortly after moving in, one of the housemates was sitting comfortably in a large armchair and talking about her summer. Suddenly, a cockroach appeared behind her shoulder.

The reaction was immediate.

The students pointed, screamed and watched as the insect slowly moved over the back of the chair towards them. It was large, shiny and seemingly completely unconcerned by the panic around it. Its antennae moved as it continued its journey, giving the impression that the insect was entirely in control of the room.

The fact that it appeared in broad daylight made the sight even more alarming.

Cockroaches are generally associated with nighttime activity, when they emerge from hiding to search for food and water. A daytime sighting can sometimes indicate that an infestation has become severe enough that the insects are being forced out of their usual hiding places because those spaces are overcrowded.

That was apparently the situation in the student house.

Looking back, the occupants have often wondered why they did not simply leave. Perhaps they did not understand how serious the problem was at first. Perhaps they believed the pest-control treatments would eventually work. Or perhaps, like many students, they had become accustomed to accepting difficult living conditions because finding somewhere else to live was not easy.

By the end of the year, however, their attempts to protect themselves had become increasingly elaborate.

The students placed the legs of their beds into saucepans filled with water. The idea was simple: if a cockroach attempted to climb up during the night, it would fall into the water and drown before reaching the bed.

It was an ingenious solution born from desperation, although knowledge gained later would make the students’ confidence in the barrier considerably less reassuring.

Cockroaches are remarkably resilient creatures. They can survive in difficult conditions and have physiological adaptations that make them unusually difficult to eliminate. Their ability to remain alive for extended periods under harsh circumstances has contributed to their reputation as one of the world’s most persistent household pests.

For someone who has experienced a severe infestation, these biological facts are not merely interesting scientific details. They can become part of a lifelong fear.

The experience left Moore with an enduring phobia of cockroaches, known as katsaridaphobia. Even decades after leaving the student house, the insects can still appear in her dreams.

Yet the experience also changed her relationship with other household pests.

Mice, head lice, threadworms and scabies are all unpleasant discoveries for any household, particularly for someone raising children. But compared with the memory of thousands of cockroaches moving through a home, those encounters seem far less frightening.

The comparison has become almost comforting: whatever the problem might be, at least it is not cockroaches.

There is something uniquely powerful about the fear created by a creature that can move quickly, hide almost anywhere, emerge unexpectedly and survive conditions that seem impossible. For someone who has lived through a major infestation, the fear is not necessarily irrational. It is rooted in an experience that combined disgust, helplessness and the loss of a basic sense of comfort at home.

A home is supposed to be a place where people can relax and sleep without worrying about what might be crawling across the floor or climbing onto their beds. The Manchester student house disrupted that assumption completely.

The memory also illustrates how dramatically attitudes towards pests and housing have changed. Today, someone discovering thousands of insects in a rented property can search for information immediately, document the conditions with a phone and seek advice from housing organisations, pest-control professionals and other tenants.

For students decades ago, the options were far more limited. Information was harder to obtain, landlords were not always challenged over poor living conditions, and young tenants could be reluctant to make a major issue of problems they did not fully understand.

What remains most striking is the psychological aftermath. The cockroaches disappeared from the house eventually, but they did not entirely disappear from memory.

Years later, a particular smell can bring them back. A glimpse of an insect in a dark corner can trigger an immediate reaction. And sometimes, even while asleep, the old fear returns.

For Moore, the experience was horrifying, but it also left her with an unusual measure of resilience. Many of life’s unpleasant surprises can now be faced with a simple thought: whatever happens, it could be worse.

It could be cockroaches.

That is perhaps the enduring legacy of the infestation. The insects may have been temporary occupants of a student house in Manchester, but for one former tenant, they became permanent residents of memory—creatures that disappeared from the walls but never completely left her dreams.
