Canadian-born singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell has officially become a United States citizen, completing a journey that began more than six decades ago when she first moved south of the Canadian border. The 82-year-old music legend shared footage from her citizenship ceremony with fans, marking a significant personal milestone for an artist whose career and life have been deeply intertwined with American music and culture.
Mitchell posted images and video from the ceremony on Instagram, including a photograph of herself standing beside an American flag. Alongside the footage, she wrote a short but meaningful caption: “A journey that began 62 years ago.”
The decision means Mitchell is now formally entitled to participate in US elections, a right she had previously been unable to exercise despite having lived in the country for most of her adult life. The singer has spoken publicly about her inability to vote and expressed frustration about being unable to take part directly in the political process of the country where she built much of her career.
At a concert in 2024, Mitchell made her political feelings clear while discussing a song critical of Donald Trump. She joked about wishing she could vote and referred to herself as a Canadian immigrant. Her comments reflected the unusual position she had occupied for decades: one of the most influential figures in American popular music while remaining a Canadian citizen.
Now, that distinction has changed.
Mitchell was born in Fort Macleod, Alberta, in 1943 and grew up in Saskatchewan after her family settled in Saskatoon. Her earliest musical experiences came through folk clubs in Saskatchewan, Calgary and Toronto, where she began developing the distinctive songwriting style that would eventually make her an international figure.
Her early career was rooted in Canada’s folk scene, but her personal and professional life soon became connected to the United States. In Toronto, she met American folk singer Chuck Mitchell. The pair married in 1965, and Joni Mitchell subsequently moved to the United States.
Their marriage lasted only two years, but the move proved decisive for Mitchell’s artistic career. By the late 1960s, she had established herself as an original and highly expressive voice within the rapidly developing American folk music movement.
Her songwriting stood apart from the traditional folk style of the period. Mitchell combined poetic and highly personal lyrics with unconventional melodies and increasingly sophisticated musical arrangements. Her work frequently explored relationships, independence, loneliness, social change and the complicated realities of modern life.
She released her debut album in 1968. Soon afterward, she used income from her early recordings to relocate to Los Angeles, settling in the Laurel Canyon area that had become an important centre for American musicians and songwriters.
There, Mitchell recorded Ladies of the Canyon, an album that became her first gold-selling record and further established her position within the American music scene. Laurel Canyon became closely associated with a generation of musicians whose work helped shape the sound of late-1960s and 1970s popular music.
Although Mitchell remained proud of her Canadian origins, California became her long-term home. She has continued to live in the state and is currently based in Santa Barbara.
Her American citizenship therefore represents a formal recognition of a relationship with the United States that has existed throughout the majority of her adult life.
Mitchell’s influence on music extends far beyond the commercial success of individual albums. She became known for an approach to songwriting that treated personal experience as a source of artistic exploration. Her songs often moved between intimate observations and broader reflections on society, relationships and changing cultural attitudes.
Her career has also been marked by periods of withdrawal from public life. Mitchell’s most recent studio album, Shine, was released in 2007. In subsequent years, she largely stepped away from regular public performance.
In 2015, she suffered a brain aneurysm that required a lengthy period of recovery. The health crisis kept her away from the stage for several years and raised widespread concern among admirers about whether she would ever perform publicly again.
Her eventual return became one of the most celebrated moments of her later career.
In 2022, Mitchell made an unexpected appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, performing an unannounced set that surprised audiences and demonstrated that she remained capable of commanding a stage despite the health challenges she had faced.
Her return to live music subsequently developed into a series of performances known as “Joni Jam” concerts, in which she appeared alongside other prominent musicians.
The performances have allowed Mitchell to reconnect with audiences while celebrating a musical catalogue that spans several generations. Her songs have continued to influence younger performers, while established artists have frequently cited her as a major inspiration.
Her transition to US citizenship comes during another period of renewed interest in her life and career.
A biographical film about Mitchell is being developed by director Cameron Crowe, who began working on the project in the early 2020s. The film is expected to explore the singer’s extraordinary career, her relationships, her creative development and her impact on popular music.
Earlier this year, record executive Clive Davis announced that Oscar-winning actor Meryl Streep would portray Mitchell in the planned biopic. The casting has generated considerable interest because of the stature of both performers and the challenge of portraying one of the most distinctive personalities in modern music.
Mitchell’s life story provides ample material for such a project. Her journey from a young Canadian folk singer to an internationally acclaimed songwriter is intertwined with some of the most important cultural transformations of the second half of the 20th century.
Her songs have been embraced by audiences across generations, while her willingness to experiment musically helped push the boundaries of what popular songwriting could achieve.
Her citizenship ceremony also adds another chapter to that story.
For Mitchell, becoming an American citizen is not simply an administrative change. It formalises a connection to the country where she spent most of her professional life, built her reputation and became one of the defining voices of modern music.
It also gives her a political right she had openly wished for: the ability to vote in US elections.
For an artist who has spent decades observing and commenting on American society through music, that right carries a particular significance. Mitchell’s songs have often reflected the political and cultural atmosphere around her, even when they focused primarily on personal experience.
Her decision to share the ceremony publicly suggests that the moment carries genuine emotional importance. The caption accompanying her post, referring to a journey that began 62 years ago, connects her present identity with the young Canadian musician who crossed into the United States in the 1960s.
That journey transformed both her personal life and the history of popular music.
At 82, Mitchell remains an influential cultural figure whose career continues to evolve. Her return to performing, renewed public attention through the planned biopic and now her acquisition of US citizenship have all brought different aspects of her extraordinary life back into focus.
After more than six decades in the United States, the legendary singer-songwriter has formally become part of the nation whose music scene helped turn her into an international icon. For Mitchell, the ceremony marks not an end to her connection with Canada, but another milestone in a remarkable life lived across two countries and generations of musical history.
