US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared notably cordial on Monday after holding a wide-ranging meeting at Gracie Mansion, where the two leaders discussed housing, affordability, immigration and other issues affecting the city.

The meeting was significant because Trump and Mamdani have frequently been on opposite sides of the political spectrum. Trump is a Republican president who has repeatedly criticised the Democratic Party and progressive political movements, while Mamdani is a Democratic socialist and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Despite those differences, the two have developed a working relationship through several meetings since Mamdani became mayor.

Speaking to reporters after their private discussion, Trump said he hoped Mamdani would become a “great mayor” for New York City. He also said that his priority was what would be good for New York and the country, while acknowledging Mamdani’s potential to lead the city.

Mamdani, meanwhile, said he was prepared to work with anyone who could deliver meaningful results for New Yorkers. He described the conversation with Trump as wide-ranging and said the two had discussed several issues affecting the city and its residents.

One of the central subjects was housing. Mamdani and Trump discussed the proposed redevelopment of Sunnyside Yard in Queens, a long-discussed project that could significantly increase the city’s housing supply. Mamdani has identified the development as an important part of his effort to address New York’s high housing costs and expand the availability of homes.

The project has also attracted Trump’s interest. During the meeting, the president indicated that Sunnyside Yard had been discussed for many years and that its development would involve federal considerations. The two sides agreed to continue discussions between their respective teams on housing and other operational matters.

Mamdani has repeatedly argued that New York faces a severe affordability challenge, with housing costs placing pressure on working families and lower-income residents. His administration has promoted greater housing construction as part of its response. The mayor has also sought cooperation from the federal government despite significant disagreements with the Trump administration over immigration and other national policies.

The Gracie Mansion meeting also included a discussion of immigration. Mamdani said he raised his concerns about the Trump administration’s decision to remove protections affecting Haitian immigrants.

He emphasised the importance of immigrant communities to New York, particularly Haitian New Yorkers, and argued that protecting immigrant residents was closely connected to the city’s economic and social wellbeing. Mamdani said he had been frank with Trump about their disagreements while continuing to engage with the administration.

Immigration remains one of the most substantial areas of difference between the two leaders. Trump has pursued stricter immigration enforcement and has made border security and immigration policy central elements of his administration. Mamdani, by contrast, has repeatedly stressed the importance of protecting immigrant communities in New York.

The mayor also addressed questions about press access during the meeting. The Trump administration has recently restricted access to the White House for several major news organisations, including CNN, MS NOW and Politico. Asked whether he had challenged Trump about the decision, Mamdani said he had made clear that he believed members of the press should be welcome at Gracie Mansion.

Mamdani pointed to the large group of journalists gathered outside the residence as an example of his position on media access. Trump responded by noting the presence of reporters, saying that organisations had previously discussed boycotting him but had not done so.

The exchange reflected a broader tension surrounding the relationship between the Trump administration and parts of the US media. While Mamdani and Trump maintained a friendly tone during their appearance, the two remain divided over several issues, including immigration and press access.

Monday’s meeting was also notable for the location. Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City’s mayor, had not hosted a sitting US president for 45 years. The last presidential visit to the residence was made by Ronald Reagan in 1981, when he met then-Mayor Ed Koch.

For Trump, the visit also had a personal dimension. The president was in New York ahead of his address to the United Nations General Assembly and has long maintained strong connections to the city, where he was born and built much of his business career.

The meeting was the latest in a series of interactions between Trump and Mamdani. Their relationship has attracted attention because of the sharp political disagreements that surrounded Mamdani’s campaign and Trump’s criticism of progressive politics.

Trump has previously used strong language to criticise Democratic politicians and progressive movements, while his administration has made opposition to what it describes as extreme left-wing policies an important part of its political messaging. Mamdani’s political platform, meanwhile, has focused heavily on affordability, housing, public services and economic issues affecting working-class New Yorkers.

Despite those differences, both men have increasingly emphasised areas where cooperation could benefit the city. Housing has emerged as one such area, particularly the potential redevelopment of Sunnyside Yard.

Mamdani said he was willing to maintain dialogue with Trump because the federal government has significant influence over policies and funding that affect New York. His approach reflects the practical demands faced by city governments, which often have to cooperate with federal authorities even when political positions differ sharply.

The mayor has also taken legal action against aspects of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Earlier this month, New York joined a multistate lawsuit challenging a change to the federal “public charge” rule, which opponents say could affect immigrant communities seeking legal status or other immigration benefits.

It was not immediately clear whether the lawsuit was discussed during Monday’s private meeting.

The meeting took place as New York prepared for a major international political week surrounding the United Nations General Assembly. Trump was scheduled to address the UN on Tuesday, bringing him together with leaders and senior officials from around the world.

For Mamdani, the meeting provided an opportunity to raise issues directly with the president while demonstrating his willingness to engage with the federal government. For Trump, the visit offered an opportunity to discuss a major US city that remains central to his personal history and political interests.

The friendly public appearance did not erase the significant policy differences between the two men. Mamdani continued to express disagreement with the administration on immigration and press access, while Trump maintained his broader political positions.

Nevertheless, the tone of the meeting was markedly different from the confrontational rhetoric that has often characterised American political debate. Trump praised Mamdani’s potential, while the mayor stressed his willingness to work with people across political divides when he believes cooperation can produce practical results for New Yorkers.

The meeting therefore highlighted both the divisions and the areas of possible cooperation between the White House and New York City Hall. Housing development, affordability and the city’s relationship with the federal government are likely to remain important subjects as both administrations continue their work.

For New Yorkers, the practical outcome may ultimately depend on whether the discussions surrounding housing and other city priorities lead to concrete cooperation. For now, the Gracie Mansion encounter demonstrated that political differences between Trump and Mamdani have not prevented direct communication or public displays of cooperation.
