Clay Travis is attempting to build a new chapter in his career at the intersection of sports, politics, digital media and sports betting, launching Sport & State as a new platform aimed at an audience that has followed his work across conservative media and American sports commentary.
The venture, which launched in August, represents Travis’s return to building a media operation of his own after his earlier success with OutKick. Sport & State combines live sports programming with political discussion, cultural commentary and betting-related content, reflecting several of the subjects that have defined Travis’s public profile over the past decade.
The new project has arrived at a time when the sports-media landscape has become increasingly crowded. Personalities including Pat McAfee and Joe Rogan have developed large audiences by blending sports, entertainment, culture and broader social commentary, while conservative commentators such as Tucker Carlson and Ben Shapiro have expanded their reach across multiple digital platforms. Travis is now seeking to establish Sport & State within that increasingly competitive environment.
One of the most visible moments surrounding the new venture came when Travis publicly offered former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick $2 million for a one-hour interview, with the money proposed for a mutually agreed charity. Travis presented the invitation as an opportunity for an unrestricted conversation, while Kaepernick did not publicly accept the proposal.
Kaepernick has remained a prominent figure in American sports and political debates since he began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustice and police treatment of Black Americans. The protest became one of the most consequential cultural controversies in modern American sports, turning Kaepernick into both an important figure for supporters of racial-justice activism and a target of criticism from opponents of his protest.
For Travis, Kaepernick has frequently represented a wider argument about the changing relationship between professional sports and American politics. His programming has regularly returned to debates surrounding athlete activism, political correctness, gender and sports, and the cultural direction of major sporting institutions.
Sport & State appears to have been designed around precisely that combination of interests. Its weekday programming includes the Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show, followed by a separate hour hosted by Travis. The wider network also features sports-focused programmes and betting content. The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton programme continues to air nationally, with the hosts discussing politics, news, sports and cultural issues.
The platform has also established a significant commercial relationship with Hard Rock Bet. The gambling company announced in September that it had become a founding partner of Sport & State, with its branding and betting information integrated into programming and digital content. The partnership includes betting-focused programmes and other sports-related material.
Sports betting is therefore more than an occasional subject on the platform. It is part of the business model surrounding the new operation. Travis has previously discussed the commercial potential of sports wagering and the way media companies can earn revenue by connecting audiences with betting operators.
That approach reflects a broader transformation in American sports media since the expansion of legal sports betting across the United States. Sports websites, broadcasters, podcasts and social-media personalities increasingly incorporate odds, betting analysis and sponsorships into their programming. For media companies, the model offers potential advertising and affiliate revenue while giving gambling companies access to highly engaged sports audiences.
Sport & State has expanded its betting coverage through programmes such as Bet The Board, which focuses on football and basketball wagering. The platform has also developed additional partnerships and distribution arrangements as it seeks to increase its audience.
In September, Sport & State reached an agreement with The Daily Wire to expand distribution, while the Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show was also added to the conservative media company’s streaming lineup. The agreement provides another route through which Travis’s programming can reach audiences outside his existing radio and digital following.
The commercial structure surrounding Sport & State extends beyond sports betting. Travis has business interests connected with several brands and companies, including a mortgage business, a coffee company, an athletics brand and a law practice. Those interests have become part of the wider ecosystem surrounding his media work.
This creates a distinctive model in which the same audience can encounter political commentary, sports analysis, betting promotions and advertisements for businesses associated with the presenter. Travis has argued that such an integrated approach can provide greater control over revenue than a traditional media model heavily dependent on subscriptions or outside advertising.
The strategy also reflects the changing economics of digital publishing. As artificial intelligence makes the production of written material faster and cheaper, media entrepreneurs increasingly face the challenge of creating content that audiences consider distinctive. For some operators, the answer is to build highly loyal communities around particular personalities and subjects rather than attempting to appeal to the broadest possible audience.
Travis has indicated that he sees depth of audience engagement as increasingly important in the modern media environment. Sport & State therefore appears intended not simply as a conventional sports website, but as a community built around a particular combination of American sports, conservative politics, cultural debates and betting.
The political dimension is particularly visible in the programming involving Travis and former CIA analyst Buck Sexton. Their discussions frequently involve President Donald Trump and members of his administration, along with broader debates about immigration, crime, elections, gender and American culture.
The hosts have also highlighted their relationships with figures in Trump’s political circle. In September, Travis and Sexton discussed a visit to the White House and their interaction with senior administration figures. Their descriptions of such encounters have become part of the programme’s broader emphasis on access to influential political personalities.
That approach places Sport & State within a wider conservative media ecosystem in which television, podcasts, radio, social media and independent digital platforms increasingly overlap. Political figures can appear on several programmes in a single week, while media personalities regularly promote one another’s shows and businesses.
For Travis, this environment is familiar. His previous venture, OutKick, developed a substantial audience by combining sports coverage with conservative cultural commentary. The company was acquired by Fox Corporation in 2021, and Travis later moved on as the operation evolved within the larger Fox media structure.
Sport & State is consequently an attempt to recreate some of the entrepreneurial independence and audience relationship associated with his earlier career.
Yet the new platform enters a market that has changed considerably. Sports audiences now have access to an enormous number of podcasts, livestreams, YouTube programmes, betting shows and social-media commentators. Personalities can build significant followings without traditional television networks, but competition for attention has also become intense.
The challenge for Travis is therefore not simply producing more content. It is maintaining audience interest while distinguishing Sport & State from the many existing sports and political programmes competing for the same viewers.
The platform’s reliance on recurring themes may be an important part of that strategy. Sports betting, American football, college athletics, political personalities, cultural disputes and debates about gender in sport provide subjects capable of generating regular discussion and audience engagement.
At the same time, the close relationship between sports and politics in contemporary American media means that Sport & State is unlikely to be viewed solely as a sports operation. Its programming reflects the increasingly blurred boundary between sports commentary, political identity and entertainment.
Travis’s career illustrates how that boundary has evolved. He began as a sports writer and commentator before building a much larger media enterprise around sports and conservative politics. His latest venture takes that combination further by placing live sports coverage, political discussion and commercial betting content within one interconnected platform.
Whether Sport & State can reach audiences beyond Travis’s established base remains an open question. Its early partnerships suggest that the platform has attracted support from major companies and established conservative media organisations. At the same time, its programming is closely associated with Travis’s existing public identity and the subjects that have defined his work for years.
The Kaepernick invitation illustrates that approach particularly clearly. Regardless of whether the former quarterback eventually responds, the offer generated significant attention because it connected one of the most controversial figures in recent American sports history with a media personality who has consistently criticised the cultural changes associated with Kaepernick’s protest.
That episode also demonstrates how modern media ventures can use controversy, personality and social-media visibility to generate attention without relying solely on traditional news coverage.
Sport & State is still in its early stages, and its long-term position in American sports media has yet to be established. Its launch nevertheless provides a window into the direction of digital sports broadcasting: increasingly personality-driven, commercially integrated and closely connected with politics and cultural debate.
For Travis, the project represents an effort to rebuild an independent media identity at a moment when sports media is undergoing another major transformation. Its success will depend on whether the platform can convert an established audience into a sustainable business while continuing to provide enough variety and relevance to compete in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
