Saudi Arabia Shuts Oil Pipeline After Drone Attack

Published: 12 September 2026. The English Chronicle Desk. The English Chronicle Online.

Saudi Arabia has temporarily halted operations on a strategically important oil pipeline after authorities said several drones launched from Iraqi territory targeted the facility, causing injuries and damage. The incident has added fresh pressure to an already fragile regional energy and security situation, with Saudi Arabia increasingly relying on the pipeline to transport crude oil while the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted amid the wider Middle East war.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the East-West pipeline was targeted by several drones in the Riyadh and Medina regions. According to Saudi officials, the attacks resulted in injuries and damage to infrastructure. The pipeline was subsequently shut down as a precautionary measure while authorities assessed the situation and worked to protect the facility.

The East-West pipeline is one of Saudi Arabia’s most important alternative oil export routes. Stretching from the Abqaiq area near the Gulf to Yanbu on the Red Sea coast, it allows Saudi crude to reach international markets without having to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Its strategic importance has increased considerably since the beginning of the current Middle East conflict, particularly as shipping through the vital waterway has faced severe disruption.

The latest attack therefore carries significance beyond the immediate damage. Any prolonged interruption to the pipeline could further complicate Saudi Arabia’s efforts to maintain oil exports at a time when regional maritime routes are under increasing pressure.

Satellite imagery from Copernicus Sentinel Data taken on Thursday showed black smoke rising near Medina along the general route of the pipeline. The imagery provided a visual indication of an incident in the area, although the precise extent of the damage and the duration of the shutdown remained unclear.

Saudi authorities said the drones originated from Iraq. The Iraqi government subsequently acknowledged that the attack had been launched from its territory and announced action against the local official responsible for the area from which the drones were believed to have originated.

The office of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said the attack had come from within Iraq’s Maysan governorate. The Iraqi government condemned the incident and expressed its opposition to attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, describing the kingdom as a neighbouring and friendly country.

In response, Riyadh said it had decided not to retaliate immediately at the request of the Iraqi prime minister. Saudi authorities said they would instead support Baghdad’s efforts to prevent further attacks originating from Iraqi territory against Saudi Arabia and other neighbouring states.

The decision appeared aimed at preventing the incident from developing into a wider confrontation between Saudi Arabia and armed groups operating from Iraq. At the same time, Riyadh made clear that it regarded the attack as a serious violation of its security and sovereignty.

Saudi authorities have previously accused Iranian-backed Iraqi militias of attacking Saudi energy infrastructure. The latest incident could therefore intensify existing concerns about the role of armed groups in the regional conflict and their ability to threaten critical energy facilities far beyond conventional battle zones.

Saudi Arabia warned that it reserved the right to take whatever measures it considers necessary to protect its sovereignty, security, energy facilities and population. The statement reflected the delicate balance facing Riyadh as it seeks to avoid a direct escalation while also protecting infrastructure that is critical to the global energy market.

The attack has also attracted condemnation from other regional governments. Bahrain, Jordan and Qatar expressed opposition to the targeting of Saudi energy infrastructure, while the Gulf Cooperation Council described the incident as a dangerous escalation and an unacceptable threat to the security of the kingdom.

The pipeline incident comes as the wider security environment surrounding Saudi Arabia becomes increasingly complicated. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi movement has declared a maritime blockade targeting Saudi Arabia and has carried out attacks against Saudi-linked oil tankers in the Red Sea.

The Houthis, who support themselves as a major force in Yemen’s ongoing conflict, have also expanded their territorial and strategic influence along the Red Sea. Their reported capture of the strategic island of Perim in the Bab al-Mandab Strait has raised further concerns about the security of one of the world’s most important maritime passages.

The Bab al-Mandab Strait connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as a critical route between Europe and Asia. Any sustained disruption there can force commercial vessels to take longer routes, increasing transportation costs, delivery times and insurance expenses.

The Houthis said navigation through the Bab al-Mandab remained safe for vessels other than those connected with Saudi Arabia following their latest advances. However, the continued conflict and the movement’s declared maritime campaign against Saudi interests have added another layer of uncertainty to regional shipping.

The combined pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait has created a particularly challenging environment for global energy markets. Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline has consequently become more important because it offers an overland alternative for transporting crude to the Red Sea.

The latest shutdown illustrates the vulnerability of even alternative routes. While the pipeline allows Saudi Arabia to avoid some of the risks associated with maritime transportation through the Gulf, it remains exposed to drone attacks and other forms of asymmetric warfare.

The consequences are already being closely watched by energy markets. Oil prices have moved above $100 a barrel during the week, reflecting concerns over supply disruptions and growing geopolitical risks. US diesel prices have also reached record levels, increasing economic and political pressure in the United States.

Higher fuel prices could become a particularly sensitive issue for US President Donald Trump as the country approaches midterm elections. A sustained rise in oil and diesel prices could affect transportation, manufacturing, household expenses and inflation, potentially turning developments in the Middle East into a domestic political concern.

For Saudi Arabia, the immediate priority is likely to be restoring the pipeline and ensuring that further attacks can be prevented. The government must also determine how to respond to the growing number of threats against its energy infrastructure without triggering a broader confrontation involving Iraq or Iran-backed armed groups.

The incident demonstrates how interconnected the region’s conflicts have become. An attack originating in Iraq has affected Saudi oil infrastructure, while the wider disruption of maritime routes is linked to developments involving Iran, Yemen and the strategic waterways surrounding the Arabian Peninsula.

The Saudi government’s decision to temporarily halt the pipeline suggests that authorities are prioritising safety while investigating the damage. The duration of the shutdown will be closely watched because the pipeline’s importance has increased significantly during the disruption of Gulf shipping routes.

At the same time, Iraq faces pressure to demonstrate that its territory will not be used as a launchpad for attacks against neighbouring states. Baghdad’s decision to dismiss the commander responsible for Maysan province indicates that the government is seeking to show that it is taking the incident seriously.

Whether those measures will be sufficient remains uncertain. The continued presence of armed groups with regional agendas presents a major challenge for governments attempting to maintain control over security and prevent their territory from becoming a source of cross-border attacks.

The latest incident therefore represents more than a temporary interruption to an oil pipeline. It highlights the growing risks surrounding the infrastructure that underpins global energy supplies and the difficulty of protecting critical facilities in an increasingly fragmented regional security environment.

As Saudi Arabia attempts to keep its oil exports moving despite disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, the security of the East-West pipeline will remain a major concern. Any further attacks or prolonged closures could place additional pressure on global oil prices and deepen uncertainty across international energy markets.
