A 40-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman have been charged after a baby boy, believed to have been between six and seven months old, was found dead at a motel in Adelaide, South Australia. Police say the infant had been deceased for some time before officers discovered him during a welfare check, prompting a major criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The discovery was made on Saturday at the Tollgate Motel in Glen Osmond, a suburb in the southern part of Adelaide. Police attended the premises to conduct a welfare check and found the child dead. The incident has since led to criminal charges against Benjamin Nicholas Houghton, 40, and Yue Ning Lieu, 42, both of whom remain in custody.

South Australia Police confirmed on Tuesday that the infant had been dead for a period of time before he was found. A post-mortem examination established that the boy was approximately six to seven months old. Authorities have not publicly disclosed further details about the precise circumstances of his death, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The case has attracted serious attention because of the child’s age and the questions surrounding the period before his death was discovered. However, police have released only limited information while investigators work to establish the sequence of events and determine what happened at the motel.

Houghton and Lieu have been charged with criminal neglect and with destroying human remains with the alleged intention of perverting the course of justice. These are serious allegations, but the charges themselves do not establish guilt. The defendants are entitled to the presumption of innocence unless and until the allegations are proved in court.

The two appeared before Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday. Neither applied for bail, and both were remanded in custody. Their matters are scheduled to return to court on 3 May 2027.

The period until the next scheduled court appearance is likely to allow further investigative and legal processes to take place. As the case progresses, prosecutors and investigators will need to establish the evidence supporting the charges, while the court will determine the legal issues that arise during the proceedings.

Police said the man and woman had been living at the Tollgate Motel since arriving in South Australia at the beginning of the year. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding their stay and the events that preceded the discovery of the child. Authorities have not released additional details about the family’s circumstances or the relationship between the adults and the infant beyond the information contained in their public statements.

The investigation was initially conducted by detectives from the eastern district of South Australia Police. Because of the nature and complexity of the incident, as well as the resources required to investigate it, the Major Crime Investigation Branch has since taken over the case.

The involvement of the specialist unit indicates that investigators are treating the circumstances as requiring a more extensive examination. However, the transfer of responsibility does not, by itself, establish the cause of death or determine whether any particular allegation is true. Those questions will depend on the evidence gathered and the findings of the relevant legal processes.

Police have appealed to members of the public for information that could help clarify what happened at the motel. In particular, officers are seeking assistance from anyone who has stayed at the Tollgate Motel and may have information relevant to the investigation.

Investigators have specifically asked people who know anything about the occupants of room four to contact Crime Stoppers. Information from motel guests, people who were present at the premises or individuals who may have observed relevant activity could help police establish a clearer timeline and identify details that might otherwise remain unknown.

Authorities have not publicly explained what information they believe potential witnesses may possess. The appeal is therefore a request for assistance rather than an indication that police have reached a final conclusion about the events surrounding the child’s death.

In investigations involving the death of an infant, establishing a reliable timeline can be particularly important. Investigators may need to examine the available physical evidence, medical findings, witness accounts and other relevant information to determine when the child died and what circumstances contributed to the discovery. The publicly available details in this case do not yet provide a complete account of those events.

The post-mortem examination has confirmed the infant’s approximate age, but police have not announced a definitive cause of death in the information released so far. It would therefore be premature to draw conclusions about how the boy died or to attribute responsibility beyond the allegations contained in the charges.

The case also highlights the importance of timely welfare checks when concerns arise about the safety or wellbeing of vulnerable people. Such checks can allow authorities to respond when someone may be at risk, although the details of the check at the Adelaide motel have not been fully disclosed.

For the investigators, the immediate task is to establish the facts through evidence and witness cooperation. For the court, the responsibility will be to consider the charges according to the law and ensure that the proceedings are conducted fairly. The next stages may provide further information, but details will depend on what investigators and the court can establish through the appropriate processes.

Police have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward through Crime Stoppers. People who stayed at the motel, particularly those who may have knowledge of room four or its occupants, are being asked to assist investigators.

For now, the death of the six-to-seven-month-old boy remains the subject of a major investigation in South Australia. Two people have been charged and remain in custody, while detectives continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Further developments are expected to emerge through the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
