Published: 10 October 2026. The English Chronicle Desk. The English Chronicle Online.

The owner of a specialist recruitment company has been accused of being behind an online campaign that allegedly exposed the personal information of Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) personnel, anti-racism activists and business executives involved in recruiting people from ethnic minority backgrounds. The allegations have raised fresh concerns about online harassment, the misuse of personal data and the growing risks faced by individuals and organisations targeted by politically motivated campaigns.

Tom Watson, a businessman from Worcester who founded Futura Energy Group, has been identified by the campaign organisation Hope Not Hate as the alleged operator of an X account known as “Big Time Charlie”. The account, which reportedly had almost 50,000 followers, was accused of publishing information about people considered political opponents or critics of far-right movements. It was deactivated shortly after the allegations became public and after journalists approached Watson for comment.

The account was associated with a database described as “Traitorbase”, which allegedly collected and organised personal information about people and organisations targeted by the campaign. According to the allegations, the material included individuals connected to anti-racism activism, the RNLI and companies that employ workers from minority ethnic communities.

The case has intensified scrutiny of how personal information available online can be gathered, organised and circulated in ways that may expose individuals to harassment or intimidation. It has also renewed questions about the responsibilities of social media platforms when accounts distribute information about private individuals or encourage others to target them.

The allegations against Watson remain allegations, and the available information does not establish that he has been found legally responsible for operating the account. Nevertheless, the circumstances surrounding the account’s removal and the evidence cited by Hope Not Hate have brought renewed attention to the potential consequences of organised online targeting.

The Big Time Charlie account had become increasingly prominent in recent weeks as far-right activists focused attention on RNLI personnel involved in rescuing people attempting to cross the English Channel in small boats. The charity has faced hostility over its humanitarian work, which includes responding to people in distress at sea regardless of their circumstances.

The RNLI’s role in Channel rescue operations has become a recurring subject of political controversy surrounding migration and border policy. While the organisation’s supporters emphasise its lifesaving mission, critics have sought to connect rescue operations with wider debates about irregular migration. The resulting tensions have sometimes spilled over into online abuse directed at staff and volunteers.

The allegations surrounding Big Time Charlie suggest that the targeting extended beyond the lifeboat charity. Anti-racism campaigners and businesses were also reportedly included, with some information apparently arranged in spreadsheet form. Such material can make it easier for others to identify individuals, locate their publicly available details and participate in coordinated harassment.

The practice commonly known as doxxing involves publishing or circulating personal information about someone, often without their consent, in circumstances that may expose them to intimidation, harassment or threats. Information may be gathered from social media accounts, professional networking platforms, public records and other online sources. Even when individual details are publicly accessible, combining them into a searchable database and presenting them in a hostile political context can create additional risks.

According to the reporting surrounding the allegations, the account appeared to use artificial intelligence to collect or process information from LinkedIn and other online sources. However, the precise methods allegedly used, the extent of any automated collection and the full contents of the database have not been independently established in the information available.

One person who said she had been targeted was Chantelle Lunt, a Green Party councillor in Merseyside who has previously faced hostility from far-right activists. Lunt said she was informed that her information had been published online and subsequently discovered details about herself on what appeared to be a spreadsheet containing information about other people involved in Stand Up to Racism.

She reported the matter to the police, expressing concern about the potential consequences of making such information available to people who might wish to intimidate or harass those named.

Lunt explained that she was accustomed to facing hostility directed at herself and her family, but said the publication of personal information in an organised format created a different level of concern. She also highlighted the way online engagement can encourage further targeting, particularly when users appear to support or amplify the circulation of such material.

Her account illustrates the wider difficulties faced by activists who become targets of politically motivated online campaigns. Beyond the immediate distress caused by the publication of personal details, those affected may worry about their families, their professional lives and their ability to continue participating in public debate without fear of intimidation.

A spokesperson for a charity reportedly targeted by the account condemned what it described as an attempt to spread misinformation and deepen divisions within communities. The organisation argued that such activity could undermine the work of groups supporting vulnerable people and divert resources away from essential services.

The spokesperson also called attention to the responsibilities of social media companies, politicians and the media in responding to misinformation and bigotry. Organisations that provide humanitarian assistance or support marginalised communities, the charity argued, should not have to devote substantial time and resources to combating targeted hostility instead of carrying out their core work.

Businesses were also reportedly among those whose details appeared on the account. The published material allegedly included photographs and names of executives said to have been involved in hiring employees from ethnic minority backgrounds.

One businessperson who described being targeted said the experience was unexpected and unpleasant, although they had not noticed any significant consequences in their own case. Their comments nevertheless highlighted the uncertainty that follows the circulation of personal information online: those targeted may not know whether the material will remain confined to social media or lead to further contact, harassment or reputational harm.

Watson founded Futura Energy Group, a specialist recruitment business that describes itself as a recruitment and talent partner for companies operating in the artificial intelligence sector. His professional activities and reported connections to the United Kingdom and the United States have formed part of the evidence cited in attempts to link him to the Big Time Charlie account.

Archived online records reportedly showed that the account had previously used the name Tom Watson. Other details cited in the reporting included references to Puerto Rico, where the company’s LinkedIn profile reportedly placed its operations, and posts concerning recruitment for technical positions.

A further connection involved Switzerland. On 20 July, the Big Time Charlie account reportedly stated that its operator was in Zurich and shared a photograph taken on the grounds of the Vitznauerhof hotel. Two days later, Watson posted on his LinkedIn profile that he was in Switzerland and shared another photograph taken at the same hotel.

These similarities were cited as part of the evidence connecting Watson with the account. However, such details should be understood in the context of the broader allegations rather than treated individually as definitive proof of who operated it.

Watson was approached for comment. The account’s deactivation after Hope Not Hate publicly identified him and after journalists sought his response added to the questions surrounding the case, but deactivation alone does not establish responsibility or constitute an admission of wrongdoing.

The episode highlights a growing challenge for digital platforms and public authorities: determining when the collection and publication of online information crosses the line from political expression into conduct that threatens privacy or facilitates harassment. Although publicly accessible information can be used for legitimate research, its aggregation and presentation for hostile purposes may create risks that are not apparent when individual details are considered separately.

Artificial intelligence adds another dimension to these concerns. Automated tools can potentially accelerate the collection, classification and cross-referencing of large amounts of information, making it easier to assemble profiles of individuals across different platforms. The technology does not itself establish malicious intent, but its use in alleged targeting campaigns raises questions about safeguards, accountability and the ability of affected people to challenge the misuse of their information.

The case also has implications for public participation. Activists, charity workers and business leaders may be discouraged from carrying out their work if they believe that taking a position on contentious political issues could expose them or their families to online targeting. Such intimidation can affect not only the people named but also the organisations and communities that depend on their contributions.

For the RNLI, anti-racism groups and other organisations involved in the controversy, the central concern is whether individuals can continue providing services, supporting vulnerable communities and participating in public life without becoming targets of organised harassment.

The allegations against Watson will require careful assessment, and any determination of individual responsibility must be based on reliable evidence. In the meantime, the case serves as a reminder that the publication of personal information can have consequences extending far beyond a social media post. As online political conflicts become increasingly intense, protecting privacy, addressing harassment and maintaining accountability remain important challenges for platforms, institutions and society as a whole.
