Australian independent MP Helen Haines has undergone a second leg amputation after being struck by a car in an alleged attack, leaving her facing a long and difficult recovery. Her husband, Phil Haines, confirmed that she was alive and in a stable condition on Wednesday, offering a message of hope as her family, colleagues and community grappled with the severity of her injuries. The incident has shocked Australia’s political establishment and renewed calls for greater civility, stronger protections for public representatives and an end to political violence.

Speaking to the media, Phil Haines said surgeons had amputated his wife’s left leg on Monday while initially attempting to save her right leg. Medical staff later determined that the second leg could not be saved. Although the injuries have dramatically changed the life of the member for Indi, her husband stressed that her survival and stable condition were the most important developments for the family.

“The good news in all this is Helen is alive and she’s stable,” he said, describing her compassion, intelligence and determination as qualities that had always defined her. He said her heart and mind remained central to how the family understood her, emphasising her capacity to care for others and her sharp intellect.

Phil Haines acknowledged that the road ahead would be demanding but said his wife was a fighter who would do her best to recover with the support and love of those around her. He urged people to take the situation day by day, recognising the uncertainty and emotional strain facing the family. The couple are due to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary next month, making the sudden crisis particularly painful for their loved ones.

Haines, the independent federal representative for Indi in the state of Victoria, was allegedly struck by a car on Monday. She was taken to the Alfred hospital in Melbourne, where she remained in critical condition as medical teams treated her injuries. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, and the motive of the alleged attacker had not been established in the updates provided by Australian authorities.

The person accused in connection with the incident, Brendan Nugent, appeared before a magistrates court in Wangaratta on Wednesday. He has been charged and remains in custody after not requesting bail. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said investigators were considering whether further charges might be appropriate. The allegations have not been established in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The attack has prompted widespread concern across Australia, particularly among people who work in public life. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said earlier on Wednesday that Haines remained in critical condition and confirmed that he had spoken with her husband. He called for restraint in public discourse and warned against allowing political disagreements to descend into intimidation or violence.

Albanese has also described difficulties faced by his own electorate office, where staff and constituents have experienced disruptive protests and abuse. He said demonstrations had included tactics that made the premises difficult to use, forcing the office to relocate. His comments highlighted broader concerns about the safety of elected representatives and the people who work with them.

Following the alleged attack, federal parliamentarians received briefings from senior officials representing Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, the Department of Home Affairs and the Australian Federal Police. The briefings were intended to allow politicians to raise concerns and seek information about security arrangements. Members of the government, opposition and crossbench were scheduled to receive separate sessions.

The prime minister said security assessments were conducted to identify risks facing parliamentarians, and funding for their protection had increased in recent years. However, he also acknowledged that elected representatives needed to be able to carry out ordinary activities without being surrounded by personal security at all times. Haines was reportedly getting something from the boot of her car when the incident occurred, illustrating how vulnerable public figures can be during routine daily tasks.

The attack has also prompted expressions of solidarity from across the political spectrum. Independent senator David Pocock described Haines as the kind of representative Australians wished they had, saying that working alongside her was among the great privileges of serving in parliament. He praised her commitment to her community and argued that the response to the violence should be to strengthen, rather than abandon, the values she represents.

Pocock also warned against political actors exploiting anger and hatred for advantage, particularly when misinformation contributes to public hostility. He said the country needed to focus on shared democratic values and the freedom of Australians to disagree without resorting to violence. His remarks reflected growing concern that aggressive political rhetoric can damage trust and make public service more dangerous.

In Indi, the electorate Haines represents, the news has been met with deep sadness. Wangaratta mayor Irene Grant described the community as being in a state of collective shock. The local council held a special meeting to condemn violence against the MP and reaffirm that threats and intimidation had no place in communities or democratic life.

Grant said the incident was deeply distressing for Haines, her family, her staff and the wider community. The response from local leaders demonstrated that the consequences of the attack extend beyond the immediate physical injuries: residents have also been left confronting the possibility that someone who dedicated years to representing them could be subjected to such violence.

Flowers have been left outside Haines’s electoral office as people seek ways to express their support. Her family has asked those wishing to help to donate to Save the Children rather than focus on sending gifts. Phil Haines said his wife’s final official engagement on the day of the incident had been a lecture associated with the charity, making the organisation a meaningful choice for anyone hoping to honour her values.

Governor-General Sam Mostyn joined Phil Haines in speaking publicly about the MP’s condition and the broader significance of the attack. Invited by the family to attend, Mostyn paid tribute to Haines as a compassionate public servant and urged Australians to respond with kindness, care and respect. She also acknowledged the first responders, police, paramedics, hospital staff and members of the public who had assisted after the incident.

Mostyn said she had spoken with Haines since Monday and had been keeping King Charles informed about her condition at the family’s invitation. She described the attack on a sitting federal parliamentarian as a moment for the country to pause and consider how public life could become more civil and constructive.

Her message focused on the need to “disagree well”, allowing citizens and politicians to argue passionately without treating opponents as enemies. Mostyn said Australians were yearning for kindness and care, and encouraged people to reach out to anyone distressed by the incident. She also urged the public to reflect on how they could contribute to a more respectful democratic culture.

The governor-general recalled discussing civility and civic engagement with Haines only two weeks earlier during a visit to a bushfire recovery hub in Euroa. During that meeting, the two women had spoken about ways to bring communities together and encourage greater participation in democracy. Mostyn said Haines had consistently looked for opportunities to strengthen connections between people, even during difficult circumstances.

The attack has also prompted reflection on the responsibilities of political leaders when choosing their words. Liberal MP Angie Bell expressed regret over remarks she had made in parliament the previous week, when she said the prime minister and small business minister Anne Aly should be “shamed and stoned in the square” over a decision involving the tax office. Aly had condemned the comments as racist and misogynistic. Bell said she had withdrawn the remarks and attempted to rectify the situation, while emphasising that political violence was unacceptable regardless of the motive behind the attack on Haines.

Authorities have not publicly established why Haines was allegedly targeted, and political figures have cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation progresses. The absence of a confirmed motive has not diminished calls for a serious examination of threats against public representatives or the wider climate in which political disagreement takes place.

For Haines’s family, however, the immediate priority remains her recovery. Phil Haines has asked supporters to continue sending love and encouragement while respecting the family’s need to deal with each day as it comes. The loss of both legs will require substantial medical care, rehabilitation and adjustments to daily life, although her family remains hopeful that her determination and the support around her will help her through the months ahead.

The incident has left a profound mark on Australia’s political community, but the response has also revealed a strong desire for solidarity across party lines. From the federal parliament to local communities in Indi, colleagues and residents have paid tribute to Haines’s public service and called for a more respectful political culture.

As police continue their investigation, the country faces two difficult tasks: establishing the circumstances of the alleged attack and ensuring that violence does not become an accepted feature of democratic life. For now, her husband’s message offers a cautious source of hope. Haines remains alive and stable, and the people who know her best are determined to support her through the long and challenging road to recovery.
