Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a historic fourth term as Brazil’s president after defeating far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro in a dramatic electoral comeback, delivering a major victory for the left and a significant setback for Brazil’s political right. The result marks an extraordinary chapter in Lula’s decades-long political career, while opening a new period of uncertainty over the country’s political stability, democratic institutions and relations with international allies.

With all votes counted, the 80-year-old incumbent received 51.79% of the vote, compared with 48.21% for his 45-year-old opponent. Lula’s margin amounted to approximately 4.4 million votes, according to the reported election figures. The electoral authorities confirmed his victory following a closely contested runoff that had kept Brazil’s political establishment and millions of voters on edge.

The result was particularly striking because Lula had lost the first round of voting to Bolsonaro earlier in October. His defeat in the initial contest had raised questions about whether the veteran left-wing politician could maintain his political influence and secure another term. It also created weeks of anxiety among progressive voters, many of whom feared that Brazil could shift further towards the far right.

Lula’s victory overturned those expectations. His comeback was especially significant because, according to the reported account of the election, no candidate who finished second in the first round had previously gone on to win the presidential runoff since Brazil returned to democracy in the 1980s. By overcoming that historical pattern, Lula demonstrated the continuing strength of his political base and his ability to attract additional support during the decisive stage of the campaign.

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd in São Paulo after the result was confirmed, Lula described the outcome as a victory for democracy and a rejection of political denialism. He thanked supporters and said his administration would seek to change the way the country was governed. His remarks reflected the central message of his campaign, which presented the election as a choice between protecting democratic institutions and allowing the far right to regain control of the presidency.

The celebrations were immediate and widespread in parts of São Paulo. Thousands of supporters gathered in the streets, waving Brazilian flags, embracing one another and celebrating the outcome. The atmosphere contrasted sharply with the uncertainty that had followed the first round, when Lula’s narrow position behind his opponent had appeared to threaten his political future.

For many supporters, the result represented more than the continuation of a presidency. It was a rejection of the prospect of another Bolsonaro administration and an expression of confidence in Lula’s political and social agenda. The campaign had mobilised voters concerned about public services, environmental protection, education, social welfare and the future of Brazil’s democratic institutions.

Health Minister Alexandre Padilha welcomed the outcome, describing it as a major victory for the Brazilian people. He argued that the second round had given voters an opportunity to consider the implications of the competing candidates’ policies for the country’s public healthcare system, education and constitutional framework. Padilha also characterised the result as an important signal for Latin America and the wider international community.

However, the election result was immediately overshadowed by Bolsonaro’s refusal to concede defeat. Speaking after the authorities confirmed Lula’s victory, the senator said it was impossible for him to accept the result and indicated that his legal team would seek to have the election annulled. His response raised fresh concerns about whether Brazil’s political divisions would deepen following the closely fought contest.

Bolsonaro reportedly challenged a decision by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend voting hours by two hours, until 7pm. He argued that the decision was unacceptable and amounted to changing the rules while the election was under way. However, his criticism drew attention to the fact that his own campaign had also requested an extension of voting hours, a detail that complicated the argument presented after the result was announced.

The dispute revived memories of the previous presidential election, when Bolsonaro’s father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, refused to acknowledge his defeat by Lula in 2022. Jair Bolsonaro was subsequently convicted over a failed attempt to overturn the election result and was sentenced to 27 years in prison, according to the supplied report. The former president’s legal troubles have remained a central feature of Brazil’s political debate and have shaped expectations surrounding his son’s presidential campaign.

Jair Bolsonaro had reportedly hoped that a victory by his son would improve his own political prospects and potentially lead to a role in a new administration. Lula’s victory therefore represents a significant setback for the former president and the wider political movement associated with his family.

The result also carries implications beyond Brazil’s borders. US President Donald Trump has been a prominent international ally of the Bolsonaro political camp, and a victory for Flávio Bolsonaro would have strengthened the position of another conservative, pro-Trump figure in Latin America. Lula’s return to office instead reinforces the presence of a major left-wing leader in a region where political power has shifted repeatedly between progressive and conservative movements.

Brazil’s relations with other Latin American governments are likely to remain an important part of Lula’s next term. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum congratulated Lula, declaring that democracy had prevailed and that the Brazilian people had won. Paraguayan President Santiago Peña also praised the Brazilian electorate for its democratic participation. Their responses reflected the regional importance attached to the outcome of one of Latin America’s largest presidential elections.

The campaign’s final days had been marked by large demonstrations supporting Lula. More than a million people reportedly gathered at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana beach on Saturday, while even larger crowds marched along São Paulo’s Paulista Avenue. These rallies provided a visible demonstration of the mobilisation that Lula’s campaign needed to overcome its first-round setback.

The election also unfolded amid allegations that pro-Bolsonaro politicians had attempted to disrupt public transport in areas where Lula enjoyed considerable support. Critics argued that such interference could prevent voters from reaching polling stations and undermine participation in the runoff. The allegations fuelled anger among some Lula supporters, although they should be distinguished from independently established findings about responsibility or intent.

Lucas Lopes, a 32-year-old public relations worker from São Paulo, described the alleged interference as another attempt by the extreme right to undermine the democratic process. His comments reflected the suspicion and frustration among voters who believed that obstacles to voting could threaten the legitimacy of the election.

Other supporters viewed the second round as an opportunity for the left to recover from its initial disappointment. Photographer Caio Marques, 40, said the political left had failed in the first round but had mobilised more effectively in the runoff. His remarks captured the determination of Lula’s supporters, many of whom considered their participation essential to protecting the result.

The reported decline in abstention also appears to have played an important role. After a record abstention rate of 21.08% in the first round, the figure fell to 19.21% in the runoff. Lula’s allies had identified improved voter turnout as a crucial opportunity, particularly because some of his supporters live farther from polling stations. The lower abstention rate may therefore have helped the incumbent strengthen his position in the final vote.

For Lula personally, the victory represents an extraordinary milestone. Born into poverty in rural Brazil, he worked in a factory before emerging as a prominent trade union leader in the industrial suburbs of São Paulo during the late 1970s. His early political career was marked by repeated disappointment, as he lost presidential elections in 1989, 1994 and 1998 before winning the presidency in 2002.

After serving two consecutive terms, Lula left office in accordance with Brazil’s constitutional limits. He eventually returned to the presidency after defeating Jair Bolsonaro in 2022, demonstrating his ability to rebuild his political standing despite years of controversy and opposition. His latest victory adds another remarkable chapter to that journey.

As Lula prepares for his next term, the challenges ahead will extend well beyond the celebrations. His administration will face the task of addressing economic pressures, improving public services, protecting the environment and governing a country deeply divided over its political direction. The narrow margin of victory means that a substantial portion of the electorate remains opposed to his leadership, making political reconciliation and institutional stability particularly important.

Bolsonaro’s refusal to concede also means that legal and political disputes could continue after the election. Brazil’s electoral institutions will be under pressure to maintain public confidence in the integrity of the result, while political leaders will need to discourage attempts to undermine democratic processes through unsupported allegations.

In São Paulo, however, the mood among Lula’s supporters was one of overwhelming relief and celebration. Photographer Maicon Douglas Bento, 34, described the victory as a moment of profound happiness, saying it represented life and hope for people who believed in love and in the future.

His words reflected the emotional significance of the election for many Brazilians who had spent weeks worrying about the country’s direction. Lula’s victory has settled the immediate presidential contest, but it has not resolved the political divisions that shaped it. The next chapter will depend on whether the returning president can translate his electoral success into effective government while defending democratic institutions and rebuilding trust across a sharply divided nation.
